4 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, June 10, 1964 ae. & clad se BIG AMBITIONS REPORT FROM OTTAWA By RUSSELL C. HONEY Durham MP Introducing a bill to amend the Farm Credit Act last week, Agriculture Minister Harry Hays said the changes are necessary to help farmers establish economic farm units and to assist them in building better houses and other build- ings and in buying the livestock and nt they need to operate efficiently. Because of the changes taking place in modern day farming necessary changes are taking place in the requirements for farm credit programs the Minister said: "In addition to loans available under the Farm Credit Corpora- tion the department of vet- erans affairs through the Vet- lerans Land Act administration provides credit to full time and part time farmers who qualify as a result of military service. Farm Credit Amendment Introduced In Parliament they have also shown a willing- ness to use good advice from the Corporation as well as a willingness and an ability to re- pay their loans. LOAN LIMITS The present loan limits under the Farm Credit Corporation legislation are $20,000 for stand- ard loans not supervised by the Corporation and $27,000 for supervised lgans, The maximum term of repayment in each case is 30 years, Rapid changes have taken place in agriculture since these limits were established, and it is now. evident that the present limits on loans are no longer adequate to establish ef- ficient, viable family farms in many sectors of Canadian agri- jculture. By doubling the size of the loans the government believes an important step will be taken toward improving the Corpora- Intermediate term credit is available to farmers through * lloans from the chartered banks guaranteed by the government under the Farm Improvement ists, a folk singing group that Loans Act, Also, in the admin-| tion's capacity to help farmers lin the way they need help and jin a way that enables them to |help themselves. ' YOUNG FARMERS Under the amended legisla- tion a father or an uncle may borrow money to assist q son or nephew or other relative to buy a farm. This particular amendment will be of great assistance to the Corporation in its efforts to setablish young men in farming. In concluding his remarks, Mr. Hays said, 'These are amendments which we believe are needed right now. I think there is a lot to be said for! doing everything we can to keep the family farm.
