Miss Lois Hurst, a former staff member of the Hospital for Sick Children, who had lectured student nurses on nutrition and diet therapy, and now a home economist at the head office of the Ontario Hydro, prepared four items of a dinner, using 'only small appliances. The meal was geared for a small amount of work particularly at a cot- tage. Miss Hurst stressed the use of color combinations which would make food more appeal- ing. Miss Hurst was thanked by Mrs. Allan Evans. The second part of the eve- ming was a talk on floral ar- fangements, accompanied by @ @emonstration, given by Mr. Henry Reed. Mr. Reed explained that the language of flowers was impor- tant, particularly to a hostess, who wished to have them say "Welcome" to her guests. Mr. Reed demonstrated the in- tricacies of bending flower stems in the proper way to fit the proper spot in an arrange- ment; the choosing of the proper flower (all flowers of a variety are not alike) to be used in a particular way; the necessity of starting with the central, tallest flower and building an arrange- ment around it and the use of the foliage of the flowers as fillers in the arrangement, Mr. Reed gave a few tips flowers. He stated that when flowers were received from the florists, or freshly cut from the garden, it was necessary to give 1 them a good drink. This was tof be done by cutting the stems on a slant, using a sharp knife, and 1 them into about three \ | inches of hot water. After the flowers had had a good drink, they would be ready to be used in arrangements. Mr. Reed was introduced by Mrs. Gordon White of the Naomi which would add to the life of Group and thanked by Mrs. Reginald Garratt of the Martha Group.
