20 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Monday, Mey 25, 1964 HOW LONG CAN HOOTENANNIES LAST? 'Happening Is Arty YTHACA, N.Y. (AP) -- Men gather at the city dump, where they build a tower and wait for a crowd. Women ar- rive and lick jam smeared on a wrecked automobile. Re- freshed, they destroy the tower and proceed to rip off men's shirts, The men hurl flares. The women shed their blouses and wave them over- head. : Such antics aré the ingredi- ents of a "Happening," a new, avante garde, three - dimen- sional art form that combines symbolism with sculpture and elements of the theatre. "It is a raw and brutal spectacle in a way" and "'im- portant both as movement 'an historically." says .Profes- sor John L. Asuire of Cornell University. "Happenings" are the cre- ative brain child of Allan Kap- row, 36, professor of fine arts at the New York State. Uni- versity College. Kaprow says "Happenings" derive directly from recent innovations in paintings. But their remote sources may be found in parades, circus acts, sports and religious rituals.' THEY ARE 'UNIQUE' "They are unique, however, in utilizing sites other than stages or arenas, in eliminat- ing the spectator and rehear- sals and in being enacted gen- | erlly, only once,"' he says. "The productions are the outgrowth of another Karpow , * lick the jam. Men destroy the creation, "Einvironment,"' in which players are surrounded by sounds, lights and odors. He added voices and action, and "Happening" was born. "More than 20 Kaprow "Hap- penings" have been performed at art galleries, festivals and universities in the United States and abroad. A recent production, en- titled Household, was created at the invitation of the festi- vai of contemporary arts com- mittee at Cornell Uuniversity. CHOOSES DUMP For his Household setting, Kaprow chose the Cornell dump. His cast: About 150 students and faculty members. The sequence of events: Men build a wooden tower on a trash mound. Poles topped with tar paper clusters afe stuck around it. strings. Around the nest, on a clothesline they hang old shirts. Cars arrive towing a smoking wreck. Women enter next and | screech. Men roll the smoking wreck into the dump and cover | it with strawberry jam. People's voices call /'Hey! Hey! Hey!" Men go to women, 1». put on shirts and squat down and watch them. Women go to the car and nest (accompanied by shouts and cursing). It ends when the women, waving their blouses like hand kerchiefs, leave the dump and dnive away, with automobile horns blaring. Alma Perry, an attractive 19-year-old blonde, said the experience was "absolutely wonderful!" LIVING A DREAM Michael Singer said: "I didn't want to talk with anyone. It was like living a dream." The symbolism of "House- hold" is clear to Kaprow. "A dump is a graveyard of Orgy The | women build nests of saplings | S THE "V.I.P." IN OUR WORLD ' .*,. is YOU!
