RIGHT IN GUELPH Oshawa Green Gaels Scalp Mohawks 10-5 By GERRY SUTTON ae Oshawa Green Gaels won the Minto Cup last year, much of the credit was given to goaltender Merv Marshall. The 17-year-old Acton native, who won the McOnaghey Medal in the Cup series as the out- standing player, displayed the same form last night Guelph's Memorial Gardens when the Green Gaels whipped Guelph Mohawks 10-5, in an OL Junior Division game. Marshali kept the Gaels in the game in the first period,| 4! Fens ap 11 shots, some point- as the Mohawks stormed around hig net during most of the period. However, Ohawa still managed to have a 4-1 lead at the end of the first, mainly because of erratic shooting on the part of the Mohawks. Guelph closed the gap in the 8 to 64,. outscoring the Gaels 3-2, but once again Mar- shall came through for the Gaels. He robbed Eddie O'Keefe midway through the second per- fod and stopped drives from Bob Brown and Barry Redwood. The Mohawks narrowed the margin early in the third pe- riod to 6-5, however, the Gaels came back with four goals in less than six minutes to salt the victory. STINSON HURT Don Stinson played a stand- out game for the Gaels in the attacking and checking depart- ment, despite bruised ribs he received early in the first per- fod, when he was given a stiff slash from a Guelph defender. Stinson, 15-year-old Huntsville centre, scored 31 goals plus 27 assists last season, in his at} first season of junior lacrosse. Last night, he scored one goai and picked up four assists, and was a threat everytime he was on the floor. Brian Thompson was the top scorer for the Gaels with three goals and one assist. John Davis added two, his sixth and seventh goals of the season, while Jim Hinkson, Jim Higgs, son contributed singles. JOHNSTON LEADS HOMESTERS Guelph's top man was Brian Johnston with two goals. Other}? goals went to O'Keefe, Brown and Jerry McKenna. Guelph, stopped 31 shots, in- was fortunately late in the third period when Davis had a breakaway and was beaten on the shot when it hit the inside of the net, but the play went right on. After the game, 'coach Jim Bishop said "Marshall won for us. We were lucky to be lead- ing after the first. Guelph tried a lot harder tonight and our in- experience showed." Only seven minor penalties were handed out in the rough contest, two against Green |Gaels. Victory moved the Gaels into a first-place tie with Mimico Mounties, and Brampton ABC's. All three teams have four points. GUELPH -- goal, Fletcher, Homer, Kish, Turner; for- wards, r, Postie, Johnston, Red- lwood, Richardson, O'Keefe, Brown, Mc- Kenna, Bergin and Magnus. This was the site of all the games throughout the season. The Oldsmobiles showed their class by winning four major trophies that were presented by General Motors recreation council. Oldsmobiles finished on top of the league in regular season play and won the final playoff in a nip and tuck battle against the Pontiacs. Members of the teams consisted of Del winning Olm- Larry Holmes, Andy Moseanko and Bert Smith. Olmstead in the final round. Then, they teamed up to beat Reg Walsh and Jack Logan in the doubles. G JACK RILEY By ED SIMON Canadian Press Staff Writer As far as memory goes, the election of Jack Riley as pres- ident of the American Hockey League marks the first time a former professional player has been chosen to guide the des- tinies of the 28-year-old organ- ization. You'd have to call it a border- line case, With all respect to Riley, a capable general man- ager with Rochester Americans until his elevation, his playing career can't be described as illustrious. The records show he played 17 games for the AHL's defunct Washington entry in the 1947-48 season as a right winger scoring five goals, and got into a couple of games for Tulsa~ol the United States League in 1949-50. But the fact remains that the 44-year-old Toronto-born execu- tive has laced up a skate in actual battle conditions, unlike his predecessor, James Balmer of Pittsburgh, or the late John Digby Chick of Windsor, Ont., who guided the AHL through most of its existence. That doesn't automatically make Riley a better president than the NHL's Clarence Camp- bell, a respected refyeree in his day but never a player, or Al Leader of the Western League, @ whose hockey career has been limited to the front office. But it should mean something to the players, Specifyically, it should be a great comfort to a man sum- moned to the presidential office to explain the circumstances of a suspension incurred in the course of discussing a__dis- allowed goal with one of the refyerees. The man behind the At the club level, there is a steady rise of former players to executive rank. Former pros occupy three of the six general manages' chairs in the NHL and five of the nine AHL gov- ernors once pursued profes- sional careers. There's no question whom the players would have picked if they'd been asked to name the new AHL president. It's bad enough that his judge is a former referee, and former referee-in-chief to boot. But this one took time off from his job to act as a prosecutor at the Nuernberg war crime trials. Things may have been differ- ent in the 1040s when the NHL presidency was occupied by Red Dutton, who once handed out some fearsome bodychecks for Montreal Maroons and New York Americans, Now there was a man who had parted a few players from their teeth be- fore he started separating them from their salary, Peterborough "Georgie's" de- might at Alexandra Park in an exhibition game that provided the fans with a little bit of everything in softball enter- tainment, ranging from very good to very poor. Basically, the Liftlock -City team came up with a fine display of bunt skill in the early stages and the A and W infield, in contrast, looked very ordinary as they tried to cope with this strategy and before they "came to", the Oshawa boys were trailing 5-0 at the end of three innings. They fought back to tie it up in the 7th with pe three-run rally and then after a scoreless 8th, the visitors pushed over two runs in their half of the 9th, to cop the verdict. With one on and one out, Joe Piontek fielded a bunt and then hit the runner with his throw and a single by Marchen to follow, gave the visitors two runs in the first inning. In the third, Georgie's bunched three hits and a walk plus another throwing error by Piontek for three more runs and their 5-0 lead. Shaughnessy, pitching for the visitors, lasted until the seventh frame and had only one bad inning up until then, the fourth when A and W scored two runs on Piontek's single, a triple by Palmer Knight and a doubled by Doug Cole. With Reg White improving greatly after the third inning, it became a ding-dong tussle WINS EUROPEAN CROWN TURIN, Italy (AP) -- Bruno Visintin of Italy scored a 15- round decision over Yolande Le- veque of France Friday night and won the new European ju- nior middleweight boxing cham.
