16 'THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thuredey, Mey 14, 1964 FIREWORKS ON HOLIDAY? Headed For Trouble At CAHA Conference By JACK SULLIVAN They feel that Canada's Olym: pic team was "robbed" of third - place bronze medal in Austria last February and that Bunny put the finger on our young guys. Canada finished fourth, the lowest placing in Olympic his- tory, and the rap is that Ahearne did us wrong. He'll be expected to answer that charge at the golden jubilee meeting of th Canadian Amateur Hockey Association in Ottawa starting Monday. But don't worry about John Francis Ahearne. He'll come out all right. No one intimidates this Dub- lin-born man who has been Eu- ropean representative of the CAHA for 35 years or so. Now, as president of the International Ice Hockey Federation, he is the most powerful amateur hockey official in the world and Canadians know it. EMERGED UNSCATHED The effervescent, 63-year-old Irishman who has lived in Eng- land almost all of his life has been up to his double chin in trouble with the CAHA before. And he has come out of the skirmishes without a mark on him. 'T'll fry him," warned Art Potter of Edmonton, CAHA president, following the Austria Olympics. Potter was there and he made it plain the issue would be thrashed out at the association's annual meeting. "Tl be there," chuckled Ahearne. "I'm not worried. Why should I be?" The controversy is a little in- volved and boils down to inter- pretation of IIHF rules pertain ing to final placings in the eight - country round - robin tournament. Ahearne saw it one way. Potter, coach Rev. David Bauer of the Canadian team and his players, another way. Here's the bckground: Three days before the tourna- ment ended, the IIHF met in Innsbruck and drew up rules that would apply if two or more teams were tied in points at conclusion of the s even-game championships. Ahearne spelled these out for reporters after the meeting, which was attended by Potter, a member of the IHF executive council. DIFFER ON MEANING Ahearne said that in event of a three-way point tie, placings would be decided on the basis of goal spread--the difference between goals scored and al- lowed -- involving the seven games. It turned out later that Potter calculated the tie-break- ing mathematics on the basis of games involving only the top four teams. Canada, Sweden and Czechos- lovakia ended in a three-way tie for second place behind gold medal-winning Russia. The Swedes, with a 31-goal spread, won thé second-place silver, The Czechs, with a spread of 19, won the bronze and Canada's spread of 15 put the team into fourth place. This was taken on the basis of seven games. Had the four - team system been used, Canada would have received the bronze medal, Injuries Cause Yogi Berra To Platoon Team DETROIT (CP)--There is no such thing as an infielder or an outfielder on the New York Yan- kees' roster any more--just a clubhouse full of interchange- able parts. The roster says there are five outfielders on the club. Of course, Berra doesn't pla- toon just for the fun of it or to prove his cerebral capacity. As long as they are healthy, Mickey Mantle stays in centre, Roger Maris in. right, Tom Tresh in left, Tony Kubek at short and Pepitone at first. The trouble is they haven't been. heatlhy. Only Bobby Rich- ardson at second base and Clete Boyer at third have played ev- ery day. "These guys are really some- thing," said Berra before Tues- day night's game with Detroit. "Ym lucky I've got them with all the injuries we've had. "I thought last year's team was the most versatile I ever saw but this one is even more 80, Maybe it's because it is more important to me now be- cause I am the manager. The Yanks' regular line up has started only once all sea- son. It lasted less than three innings before injuries struck Sunday. BUNNY AHEARNE Of course, there was haggl- ing. A hastily called meeting of $15,000 Needed For Olympic Trials TORONTO (CP) -- Toronto Kings, Canadian senior basket- ball champions, may eventually reach the Olympics in Japan later this year but they'll have to get around two more guards before they reach their goal. POTTER ANGRY The meeting ended 10 min- ute before Sweden won 8-3, and too late to inform 'Father Bauer and his players. They had left a dewn hotel party to go to the arena and get their bronze medals, They left in a huff before the centre-ice medal presentations Potter blew his top. It wasn't the first time a CAHA president had vowed to get Bunny. In 1952, immediately after the Winter Games in Oslo when Ed. monton won the hockey gold medal, Doug Grimston of New Westminster, B.C., traded punches with Bunny over the team's pre - Games exhibition tour of Europe. It involved the financial setup.
