By JACK SULLIVAN Canadian Press Sports Editor Simply by coincidence, press conferences were held in Tor- onto and New York last Tues- afternoon and each was called with one object in mind: Raise money from the public to send Canadian and American teams to the summer Olympic Games in Tokyo next October. This is old stuff to the Amer- feans but it marked the first time that the Canadians kicked off a national appeal to the pub- lic. In previous years, the cam- paigns were more or less secret. The Canadian Olympic Asso- ciation's appeal was simple and to the point. It needs $100,000 to send 103 athletes and 17 offi- cials to Japan and to ensure costs in the next four years. The Americans injected a lot of jazz into their appeal, and it is something the COA is look- ing into, The U.S. Olympic peo- ple have had all sorts of fund-| raising gimmicks over the year and the latest, announced Tues- day, was somtehing aimed at people with checking accounts in the 15,000 U.S. commercial banks. The plan is that the banks, sending out their monthly state- ments, include an envelope and $1,000,000 and $2,000,000. They'll need every nickel of it, and more, because the Americans plan to send 500 or more ath- letes to Tokyo.
