MYERS, Ph.D. How delightful to see and hear your child from 6 to 12 say to the rest of the family, on his own accord, at § 9 or 10 o'clock, "It's my bedtime, good- night."" An occasional child does just this. You may have seen this happen when you were a guest in someone's home, But most children today don't have such a gracious and self- supervised way of going to bed. Imagine the millions of children who will be the centre of a tra- gic scene tonight at bedtime, The ordeal may last for 20 minutes or an hour or more, when' irritations between the child and a parent or both par- ents, may gradually rise, until in rage the youngster finally goes to bed, leaving an angry mother and father behind. One parent may have suid to the child at what was supposed to be his bedtime, or sever! minutes later, "Time to go to bed." This reminder may then |have been in a moderate tcc, | The youngster may have made no response at all in words or action, He may have found added interest in a TV p.ogram, in a comic page, or book, or in some other matter. LOUDER TONES After several fi more minutes he may have started to argue or sharply retort, "Just a min- ute." Many a parent reading this column now could supply the lines for the later scenes. Lucky if this youngster is in bed ready to sleep an hour or two past his regular bedtime. So the bedtime tragedy goes on énight, tomorrow night, every night indefinitely. It's not so much the. loss of| his sleep that matters most, but} the emotional ordeal shared by f him and his parents. If such emotional trials continue, all of the family might have been far better off is the boy had stayed up about as late as he wished. NEEDS SLEEP | But parents need not make} this choice of the "lesser of two evils."" The youngster does need | the sleep provided by a regular bedtime schedule. Such prob- lems can be prevented if, in earlier years, the child is effec- \tively disciplined to conform| jreasonably well to family regu-} lations, by parents who specific-| ally tell the youngster what to do and expect to be obeyed. Now suppose you are a parent jof the child, say from 6 to 12, who chronically dawdles at bed- time.
