Steel Doors Provide Several Advantages One of the easiest and most decorative ways to spruce up an old house or lend added charm to a new one is with warp-free steel doors. In addition to beau- ty, new types of steel doors now available offer economy, safety and ease of installation. Sound-insulated steel doors in decorator colors and _ finishes have many advantages when used outside the house. 'They are also suitable for any room or closet inside. © You can have your choice of a painted finish in every shade of the rainbow, and then some. Steel doors also permit you to change the color at will with a minimum of effort. Then there are vinyl or plastic coatings in many colors and patterns that resist fading and scratching while letting you blend the door with any kind of room decor. If porcelain-on-steel is your choice, you can have solid colors or de- signs with a matte or glossy fin- ish that is chip resistant and easy to keep clean. When it comes to styles, steel doors again set the pace. There are single, double, sliding and folding doors, as well as units with glass inserts or side lights, louvers and transoms. " In addition to their handsome appearance, steel doors offer economy because they last long- er than any other kind. Made of cold rolled or galvanized steel sheet, they stand up under extraordinary abuse and require a minimum of upkeep. They are immune to rotting, swelling, warping and sagging regardless of the climate, age or wear. Since they retain their true di- dimensions, there is a tight seal between the door and frame. When used outside in colder climes, they virtually eliminate the need for storm doors. And when hardened steel locks are combined with strong steel entry doors, you needn't worry about security. The safety features of steel doors make them just right for the hobby room if any member of the family uses inflammable paints or electrical tools. They should also be used on house entries from the garage and furnace rooms where a fire could start. Steel doors with- stand much higher tempera- tures than any other door ma- terial and cannot contribute fuel to a fire. If you're watching your bud- get, the ease of installation of steel doors will help you save money without foregoing qual- ity. Here's a job the man of the house can do. The doors are delivered with their own frames, locks and hinges, already accurately align- ed. Everything fits perfectly, so. the door can be installed with a minimum of time ,effort and cost Wall construction presents no problem. Steel door frames are DOORS OF STEEL now come in a variety of styles, colors and finishes--and when you add their modern good looks to the rugged qualities of steel--it's easy to see why many homeowners are adding this kind of door. available for use on _ plaster, block, tile masonry, laminated, drywall or any combination of materials. They are even easy to adjust for irregular door openings. And if you like, you can hang steel doors right on existing wooden frames. Here ere five easy steps for hanging steel doors. 1. Set the factory assembled frame in place and secure it to the studs. 2. Fix the loose hinge leaves to the door with sheet metal Home Search Common Task Searching for a home is a uni- versal occupation. Sooner or later we have to meet this prob- lem of providing living accom- modation for ourselves and our families, whether it be the leas- ing of an apartment, renting a house, or having a home built. We may be searching for a permanent place to live or just looking around for temporary quarters, still the same ques- tions must be answered -- What part of town.do we want to live in? Where will we find easy ac- cess to work, to schools, to church and_ shopping facili- ties% Is it more economical to rent a place than to invest in a home of our own at this stage? Eventually every adult is faced with one or more of these questions. For a contented home life much depends on how wisely we approach this problem of find- ing safe, sound, attractive and comfortable living accommoda- tion at the right price and in a convenient location. Housing is also the concern of govern- ments. Municipal, provincial and federal governments in Can- ada are actively engaged in pro- viding better housing. screws which are supplied with the unit. 3, Hang the door, dropping the pins in the hinges. You'll get a perfect fit every time because of accurate assembly. 4. Set the cylindrical lock in the door which is already mor- tised, drilled and tapped. 5. Attach the strike plate to the pre-mortised steel frame. It's as simple as that. Hardwood walls have a en- dency to mellow into a beautiful natural tone over the years, and a picture hung flat against it leaves a matching spot if left indefinitely. To prevent this, just push a thumbtack in the picture back or drive a nail into the wall to leave a half inch air space for light to filter through. THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, April 24, 1964 19 Lumber Given' Hidden Value New "engineered lumber". is far more than a selling phrase; the improved product can help reduce building and mainten- ance costs and contribute to more beautiful walls. This is the announcement of a leading research engineer, E. M. Williston, technical director of softwood lumber products for Weyerhaeuser Company. The term is applied to ad- vanced construction lumber. . . the material for wall studs, floor joists and roof rafters. This is lumber nominally 2x4 to 2x12 inches in size. Now, this lumber called "common dimension' in the trade, is being manufac- tured to new size and quality standards so the pieces are strong, more stable and hold nails tighter. "In effect, the new drier material adds hidden value that helps reduce maintenance costs," says Williston. Most all the shrinkage of the lumber occurs while the lumber is being dried at the mill so the frame- work is solid and stable in the house, he explains. Equally important, the dry lumber holds nails tighter and thus guards against nail-popping in plasterboard, an unsightly. and costly failure. "Good construction, either in a new home or a room addition, is a combination of many good materials and particularly good workmanship," he adds. "But dry framing lumber can _ help provide a vital backbone for interior and exterior wall sur- faces that have lasting beauty." Williston acknowledges that not all manufacturers are pro- ducing framing lumber to the new specifications. However, he: said, the word "dry" now is stamped on material that is kiln-dried (preseasoned) at the mill to the more rigid specifications. Tee ROMKE STEL Beover Farm Building Rep.
