mids "Q -THE OSHAWA. CHRO TIMES, Fridey, April 24, 1964 Here's Spring Theme: Paint, Paper, Plant As everyone knows; Spring is the ideal time of the year to make home and garden: im- provements, ut Spring is also a_ great time to relax and thaw out in the balmy breezes -- therefore, those home fix-up chores often _ get neglected year after year. So why not turn over a new Extra Room In Breezeway -- There are a number of im- provements that can be made in existing homes to provide extra room or more usable space. A breezeway makes extra room. Enclose it with modern window units. Even without heat, enclosure' will give you two or three months of extra use in the spring and fall. Come rainy weather, your porch is still a pleasant room for the whole family. Enclosure will keep out dust and rain, so you can keep this new room clean and furnish it with better furniture. Usually a porch or breezeway is easy to heat, so it is an economical way of getting a cheerful extra room for the whole year. a fine Perhaps the second most} pcepular use of windows in re- modelling is to turn an unused attic into living space. Here windows will frequently make the difference betwen livable and unlivable rooms; or even with good insulation, second floor rooms require plenty of ventilation. And if' you put up a large dormer, you'll not only get plenty of fresh air and plenty of light; you'll get more space. No matter what type of room improvement you are planning, remember that the windows are as important for all-round beauty, enjoyment and satis- faction as any other element. leaf and make this the year you paint, paper and plant. If major home improvements figure in your plans, this is def- initely a good time to take ac- tion, because financing will be relatively easy to obtain, at low- er rates. Another reason why this is a pirticularly good year to spruce up is that there are so many new and exciting fixtures and building materials available. For the bathroom, not only are there a host of beautiful, colorful tiles on the market, but fixtures, too, have never been more attractive. There are even exquisitely decorated wash basins, with tile, towels and other accessories patterned to match. For kitchens, news is every- where. Ranges come in about as mahy models as there are styles in milady's fashions. Re- frigerators offer a world of won- derful new features--and freez- ers are better than ever. Washes and dryers can now be stacked, if you prefer, rather than set side by side. Small ap- pliances abound; it seems there's a handy unit for making life easier at every turn. If you plan to paint the house, let your imagination run wild because you can now have the colors you want. You can also buy paints that dry in textured finishes, -- With the new' water-base paints, even the messiest do-it- yourselfer need not be afraid to tackle an entire room. Spills wash right up with soap and water. Wallpaper, which for a-num- ber of years has not been too popular, is now making a big comeback, and no wonder -- the selection of patterns is so ex- tensive and exquisite. Paneling, used exclusively in a room or combined with wall- paper or paint, is also becom- ing more widely used in rooms other than the den. With the greater interest in Early American furniture and the Spanish decor, paneling really fits the bill. Another wall covering that's a favorite is the mirror -- large and antiqued or elaborately framed. In small rooms, the mirror really does its part in giving the illusion of increased size. Ceilings have become over- grown skylights with the addi- tion of translucent panels. They let in the more light, very colorfully. Ceilings may be wallpapered, covered with tile boards, or otherwise finished in unusual ways. Indoors and out of doors, there are sO many ways the clever homeowner can improve his home -- and there's never been a better time to do it than this Spring. FUN MEANS NOISE and this soda fountain-recreation room is sure to spell fun. The noise can be reduced by good ceiling tile. It's suggested that in remodeling, the ceil- ing be installed first and then the noise of future ham- mering and sawing will be lessened. NOW OPEN ...9 A.M. to 9 P.M.
