MATCH=LESS SAVINGS Temple Taxi, who until re- cently held licenses from th informed new its licenses because it does not do enough business in the Village to make it worth while. "A licence costs $10 for the first taxi and $5. for each addi- tional taxi in a fleet, Drivers fees are $5 per person yearly. Village Councillors took up the matter at their meeting Mon- day night and it was decided that all Pickering Village | by- laws will be reviewed by Council as a committee-of-the-whole on May 19. If Village residents 'call a taxi company which is not li- censed, the company would face a fine of up to $50 for picking wp a resident in the Village. Since there is no taxi in service which holds a licence, any resi- dent cailing a taxi would be con- tributing to the breaking of the bylaw. Councillors discussed the situ- much money they had received from Pickering fares over the present year. Clerk Bruce Ho- garth pointed out to the Reeve that it would probably take a week to go over all' the work sheets. The original bylaw was pass- ed during the time that Picker- ing had a taxi in order not to create unfair outside competi- tion for him. It was, in fact, giving him a monopoly in the village as long as no other com-| pany took out a licence. | Several Councillors agreed that the Pickering bylaws should be revised because they are un- fair at the moment. In some in-| stances a business has to take| out a license and in others they! die. the taxi bylaw, because if an emergency arose and a taxi refused to come into the Vil- lage for fear of the fine, there | would be a public outcry. | In the meantime it is still against the law for any taxi company to pick up a fare in Pickering Village.
