BIBLE LESSON Creation Story Rich In Imagery Scripture--Genesis 1:26.30; Psalm 8; Luke 12:4.7. By R. H. RAMSEY Before we examine today's lesson in detail, we s note three factors which make the creation of man so important in the Genesis narrative: more space is devoted to this creative act than to any other; this is the only time in which we find @ plural pronoun us, relating to God, indicating a counsel of the Trinity; and the creation of man is God's last and final in- stance of creative activity. The phrase, "'in the image of ' God" (Genesis 1:26), has been given different interpretations by various theologians. How- ever, they all agree on one major point: Iti s not a physical imagery. Rather it is an image of true knowledge, righteous- ness and holiness, all of which gg lost after man's fall in Additionally, being created in 's image, man has a rational and moral nature, and an element of spirituality. Man lost none of these through sin. he could not lose them him there to till it and care for it. LORD OF CREATION The subject of the 8th Psalm is Man and Nature. Specifically, it is designed to show that man, in turn, losing his divinely as- Pg position of dominion over the earth and its creatures. GOD'S COMMANDS In verses 28-30, we have God's commands to man re- garding his conduct on earth. Not only is man to have domin- ion over all creatures b th though he seems a mere atom compared with the universe has been appointed lord of creation and is greater than Nature, her vastness and magnificence not- withstanding. As moral must ever take pre- cedence over material, so man is always greater than matter, and the eternal greater than the temporal. Th Psalm opens and closes with an acknowledgement of the him, he is to "be fruitful and multiply," that is, to produce offspring to replenish the earth and subdue it. This word replenish has often been misinterpreted. The orig- inal Hebrew word does not mean refill, as though there had once been a race of human 'be- ings on the earth, by this time destroyed, but simply to fill up the earth. In verses 29 and 30 we find another indication of the rich and abounding love of our Heave the matter of man's food and the food for his beasts, "er enly Father: basic directions in|qoq sovereignty of Jehovah, who has ordained that even the feeblest representatives of hu- manity should be His cham- pions, silencing all who deny His goodness and providence. While speaking of the majesty and glory of the created heav- ens, the Psalmist emphasizes the lofty position given man by the Creator. Though he implies a strong negation of man's worthiness to be thus honored (vv. 3; 4), it is not in compari- son with the material universe. Instead, it is in comparson wth ANSWERS OWN QUESTION Then he proceeds to answer his own question. Man was made lower than 'God, but he has been set over the whole of creation, And his domain be- comes more extensive and abso- lute as his intellectual and moral culture advances. Let us now examine man's twofold reaction to the charac- ter of God, as put forth in Luke 12:4-7. In these verses we find two uses of the word fear, one which is urged upon'men, and the other type of fear we should be delivered from. In verses 4 and 5 we are told not to be afraid of men, becausé all they can do is destroy the body.) Rather we should fear God, for He alone has the power to cast man's eternal soul into Hell. The second part of the para- graph urges a freedom from| fear concerning those things which are necessary for daily life on earth. No matter how Blackstock UCW Plan Program By MRS.
