Hospital Boord's responsibilities cover the entire operation of 'the Hospital, includ- ing patient core, this function is usually delegated by Boards to their organized medical stoffs to corry out, in accordance with accepted medical practise. The fact that our hospital is fully accredited by the Canadian Council on Hospital Accreditotion is the public's assurance that the quality of care and facilities being offered to the Citizens of Oshawa and district is up 'to an ecceptoble standard. Then too, our hospital is fully approved for the training of student nurses, laboratory technicians and rotating interns. We are hoping for an approval: for our X-Ray course . , , this is pend- ing and is expected shortly. As President of the hospital, it has always been heartening for me to receive scores ond scores of favorable comments on the potient care thot our Organizotion tries to provide. | can say, too, that the Board is very interested in hearing of these comments. You are all oware, | am sure, thot the new Wing hos been in full operation for almost the entire year and it has been operating ot peak capacity. Unfortunately, we still have sizeable woiting lists, numbering at times up to 800 people, This has been distressing to me, and, | am sure, to every member of the Board, ond | would like to point out 'thot this is one reason why elective coses--thot is, those cases not requiring immedi- ate admission, are given booking dates two ond three months in the future. Of course, emergency cases ore admitted immediately. Because of this situotion, the Boord, at the wemot time, is ivenloatiog the possibility of further expansion of both services ond beds so thot we -- be able to increose the facilities available for the Citizens of this oreo. It is @ never ending ++, especially ina City ond Gietrict that is growing os rapidly as this area, Your Board must keep in mind, ot all times, thot hospital beds cost approximately about $18, 000 each to build and an additional $8,000 a year to operate, so we must oiways be sure that the facilities provided ore utilized to the best advon- tage and not built only becouse of Community pride. This great Community Enterprise is, | think, a testimonial to the type of Citizenship which exists in a. This Hospital has been put here by the people-- for the people -- and | can honestly testify to the fact that your Board of Difectors operate with this thought ever foremost in their minds. As you ore aware, | have been President of this Hospital for several yeors and it has been an ex- perience that | shall always cherish. It is my desire to step aside ot the end of this term and in doing so | wish to thonk everyone for the assistance given ond the courtesy extended to me, hoping thot you will give the some support to my 'suc- cessor. It is @ great privilege to live in a City where good Citizenship is the constant goal of everyone ond where unselfish effort is expended by-so many on beholf of our humanitarian organizotions. | thonk you so much.
