13 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, March 25,,1964 Demand Beating Regina Motel, Hotel Industry REGINA (CP)--The hotel and mote] industry in Regina is ex- panding its facilities faster than the demand for services and a report on the industry indicates if the trend continues distress conditions will follow. The report was prepared by a private firm for a group in- terested in constructing a. hotel at the Regina airport. It said facilities now exceed demand and "'our findings do not lead us to believe new hotel construction in Regina is war- ranted now or in the immediate future." Charles Burton, manager of the Hotel Saskatchewan, largest in the city, said the report re- flected a situation genera] in most North American cities, Oc- cupancy rates were dropping to levels general during the De- pression year despite an over- all increase in business, In the United States the na- tional occupancy rate has dropped to 60 per cent from a high of 93 per cent in 1946 and the Canadian situation was little better, Mr. Burton said, "Regina occupancy rates run between 60 and 75 per cent with the majority of hotels in the lower range." It is generally ac- cepted that a 70 per cent occu- pancy is the break-even point. FACE CRISIS An industry 'spokesman said hotels and motels face a period of crisis within a decade if cur- rent trends continue. "The crisis is imminent as a result of over- building, excess capacity and rising costs with a. resoluting profit squeeze."
