Here is another hand we played where straightforward bidding got us to the best com tract and brought us a good match point score. ~ 3 Mrs. Hayden (South) respond: ed to my heart bid with a jump to two spades, thus showing' a very good hand and at least 'a mild interest in reaching a slam contract. After I bid three clubs, Mrs. Hayden showed heart sup- port by bidding three hearts, My three spade bid was in+ tended to show not only sup- port for spades, but also to identify my shortage in dia- monds (since I had by now bid three suits). : Hayden laucnhed into Blackwood, and after learning that I had two aces and one king, she contracted for six spades. She lost only a spade trick and easily made the i. Strangely enough, we got out of the 17 match points it was possible tp score on a board. Obviously only several other pairs got to six spades at the 18 tables where the hand was played. This was rather surprising, since you would think that in a field including many of Amer- ica's top bridge players, more pairs would have found the best contract. Apparently something went wrong with the most tables and the slam spades was not reached. ~ Quite a few pairs did bid @ slam, but they chose six hearts as the final resting place instead. of six m when spades were trump be cause declarer could dis; heart on one of dummy's clubs. South was able to two diamonds in dummy and thus make 12 tricks. y | NEED$2,000, TO RE-RENT MY OLD TOWN HOUSE, AND RE-HIRE MN SERVANTS" I'LL PASS YOU ENN tem Tomorrow: Test Your dummy play, LI'L ABNER OFF ON MY NEPHEW, AS NEW ING YORK'S LEAD DEBUTANTE THE LONE RANGER NEWS IN BRIEF 'MARRIAGE' IMPOSSIBLE: MONTREAL (CP) -- Fran- cois Aquin, president of the Quebec Libera] Federation, said Tuesday a "marriage" between the provincial party and. the federal Liberal organization: is impossible.
