H. RAMSEY The discourses and prayer, be- ginning with John 13, contain the most profound, intimate, lofty and inexhaustible truths ever expressed by Christ. Because they were spoken only in the Upper Room, or nearby, we can assume they were intended for the disciples. They have come down to us, however, through the Gospel of John, one-third of which is de- voted to a vivid and minute de- tailing of Christ's last 24 hours among men, In the opening verses of chap- ter 13, the disciple reveals something of the oniniscience of Christ. His knowledge of the past and the future shows clearly that His will and think- ing are one with God. Now, the One who shares om- nipotence with the Father, per- forms an act which makes this divine majesty the lowliest of servants. He rises from the table where supper has already to wash the feet of the others was to declare himself the ser- vant of them all. So, Jesus waited to see what they would do. When it became apparent that they would do nothing, Jesus, Himself, per- formed the lowly office the dis- ciples were too proud to dis- charge, Instead of chastising them for their pride and stubbornness, Jesus forgives them, laying down a great fundamental law for all of life: as He has set the example, so should they all follow. Then He adds one of the greatest statements con- cerning Christian conduct found anywhere in the Gospels (John 13:34, 35): "even as I have loved you, that ye also love one another." The second half of today's lesson deals with the trial of Jesus before Pilate. Pontius Pilate was a Roman citizen who had been appointed pro- curator of Judea by Tiberius, Following the scourging, Pi- laie is again confronted with Jesus, Listening to Him; he be- comes convinced of His inno- cence and greatness, and he once more seeks to have Him released. The Jews will have none of it, catch Pilate in a trap, and demand Christ's death. To save his own position, Pilate has no other choice but to deliver Christ for crucifixion. Now Pilate wished only to in- sult and provoke these Jews who bad driven him into a cor- ner, and made him, a Roman officer, give an innocent man} up to crucifixion. | As it was. customary to put a tablet over the cross of every criminal indicating the charge against him, Pilate ordered the lone for Jesus to read 'Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews." Infuriated by the title, the Chief priest demanded it be removed. Jesus' accusers, Pilate asks the nature of the charges against Him, The Jews avoid a direct answer, saying if Christ were not an evil-doer, He would not be before Pilate. Recognizing the flippancy of the answer, Pilate tells the accusers to take Jesus and judge Him according to their own laws. The Jews answer that they have no right to put a man to death. (This power had been taken from the Jews some twenty years pre- viously when Judea became a Roman province). Now. Pilate turns from ques- tioning the Jews to interrogat- ing Christ, asking Him if He is the King of the Jews. Without directly replying to Pilate, Jesus bares the basic antagonism of the people and the rulers to Himself. He af- firms His kingship. and at the same time, explains now He is a king.
