Marty Barry Still Recalls The Years He Played In NHL HALIFAX (CP) -- Marty ; Barry relaxed in an armchair in his comfortable Halifax apartment and recalled his career in the National Hockey . League with modesty becoming to a former Lady Byng Trophy winner. Barry was never a super-star during his 11 years in the NHL. His name has faded from the memory of many who followed hockey in the 1930s and is al- most unknown among the younger generation of fans. But folks around Detroit whose hockey recollections go back to the mid-'30s won't soon forget the high-scoring line of Marty Barry, Larry Aurie and Herb Lewis that helped the Red Wings to Stanley Cup victories in 1936 and 1937, Now 57, Barry is manager of a groceteria at Shannon Park, a maval base with married quarters in nearby Dartmouth. His hair is almost completely grey and his tall, solid frame has added a few pounds since . his playing days. Hs Raised in Montreal, Barry © played all his early hockey there, jumping to the old New York Americans of the NHL in 1927 at the age of 21. "Montreal didn't want me," he recalls, 'They had a good -- and it was hard to break SENT TO AHL Even the Americans didn't keep him long. He was shipped down to Philadelphia of the American Hockey League and moved to New Haven of the same circuit. iE Barry's second crack at the big time came in 1929 when Boston Bruins drafted him. This time he, stayed up. MciNTYRE HOOD England to The Oshawa Times | LONDON -- A bizarre semi- final, with at least two and possibly threes second division clubs involved, lies ahead in the English Cup competition. Preston and Swansea, both sec- ond division clubs, have been drawn against each other, so for the first time since 1049, there will be a second division team in the final at Wembley. In that year, Leicester City, near the bottom of the second division, were finalists, but miwere beaten by Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1. The other semi-final game is still in doubt as I write. Man- chester United and Sunderland drew again in their replay, and will now have a third game on neutral ground to decide which team will meet West Ham. So there is still a possibility of three second division teams in the semi-final, and also of a final between two teams from that grade of football. This would happen if Sunderland got through to the semi-final, and then beat West Ham to qualify for the Wembley days of glory. If that should happen, it would be the first time since 1907 that there have been three second division semi-finalists. In that year, when Wolverhamp- ton, then in the second division, won the cup by beating first division Newcastle United, the other semi-inalihts were Ful- ham and Southampton of the second division, mouth, N.S., the correct: way to hold a stick. Barry, now in his 50s, manages a groceteria at a Dartmouth housing proj- ect for navy families. Dart League Third Section | Is Closer Race | Speedway the last Barry heard of him, were also high up in the scoring. And there were Annual F.A. May Be Real Surprise and hard skater. He gained a reputation as an "iron man" because he missed only one game in 11 seasons but em- phasizes that he never held a record for consecutive games played. "There were only 44 and 48 games in a season during my called. Hockey was rugged but I think it was cleaner than it is today, None of this pushing into the boards and all that." ACE BAILEY HURT Still, Barry was on the ice in a Bruins uniform when Ace Bailey of Toronto Maple Leafs picked up the puck in his own) some other top names. Cup Final Looking back into the rec- ords, it is found that the last time a second division eleven won the cup was in 1931, when West Bromwich Albion beat Birmingham City in the final. West Bromwich in that year, also won promotion, Sunder- land could well emulate that performance by winning the cup and the second division cham- pionship this year. There is another ' interesting angle to this year's cup final. Should Swansea get into the final by defeating Preston,|j their opponénts, whoever they are, would automatically quali- fy for the next European Cup Winners' Competition, whether they win or lose at Wembley. Because they come from Wales, Swansea have to qualify for the European Cup seriés through the Welsh Cup com- petition, not that for the Eng- lish Cup. As they have already been knocked out of the Welsh Cup competition,'they are auto- matically ineligible for the European Cup Winners compe- tition, while their Wembley op- ponents, if Swansea got there, would by into it. CELTIC ADVANCE Glasgow Celtic sprang a sur- prise at Bratislava when, in the second leg of their quarter- final European Cup Winners series, they defeated S'oyan on the Czechs' own ground, 1-0. and advanced into the semi-final by an aggregate score of 2-0. They won the first leg at Park- head in Glasgow, also by 1-0. This virtually- puts two Brit- ish teams into the semi-final, as Manchester United have a three-goal lead over Lisbon Sporting Club, and should win through to the last four. And if the draw comes out right, it might mean Manchester United and Celtic meeting in the final to keep the cup in Britian for another year, as Tottenham | The following are results of|won it last year.
