Youth Meeting To Delve Into Smoking Peril WASHINGTON (AP) A national conference on "Smok- ing and Youth" will be held here | in May, under sponsorship of the Children's Bureau. One boy} and one girl from each state are expected to participate. The Children's Bureau as yesterday the conference is an initial step in an education pro- gram based on the findings of the Surgeon General's advisory committee on smoking and health. Py) Purpose of the conference, the bureau said, is to plan effective ways to inform young people about the health hazards of cigaret smoking. 'We want to use the knowl- edge we now have to the maxi- mum benefit of our younger generation," explained Mrs. Katherine B. Oettinger, chief of the bureau. "Young people themselves will decide whether they are going to smoke." ROUND-TOED SHOES ? Information Gives Style There's plenty of fashion afoot for the fashion-conscious young Miss, says the Shoe Information Bureau of Canada. Style trends that have been dominant in women's shoes are showing up in much of the attractive foot- wear being made for the young- er generation this season. In general, shoes are lighter looking, with lighter weight soles. For dress shoes, the open- ed up look is leading in popular- ity. There are straps, cut outs on vamps, perforations, T-straps and open shanks similar to styles that have met with great acceptance in women's fashion footwear. More color is pre- valent than in previous seasons. Patent leather has been used ex- tensively for dress shoes--black the leader, with increasing inter- est in red and white. New importance has _ been given to the styling of casuals.
