28 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, Morch 4, 1964 Canada Council Wants More Pay OTTAWA (CP) -- The Canada; It made the statement in a Council told the government to-|brief to Secretary of State La- day that the discrepancy be-|montagne urging the govern- tween public funds available to}ment to increase the council's it and to the National Researchjendowment fund to $80,000,000 |from $50,000,000 to provide more ¥ % look your *» best for Council is unjustified. an EATON SUPER VALUE Men's and Young Men's °'64 Styled Wool Worsted Two. The council said that in 1962- 63 NRC had funds of $10,580,- 000 for scholarships, fellowships and associateship in universi-| ties and for grants in aid of re- search. However, the council had only $1,200,000 for similar aid in the arts, humanities and social sciences. "In the council's view this dis- crepancy is far greater than is justified by the needs of the country," the brief said. The $50,000,000 endowment fund, the brief said, produces inadequate income to permit the council to fulfil its obliga- tions. Estimated revenue from the fund in 1963-64 was $3,100,- 000. The fund had not been in- creased since the council was instituted in 1957. In 1960 the council had requested that the fund be increased by $500,000 but this had been rejected by the former Conservative gov- ernment, The brief urged that $10,000,- 000 be added to the endowment fund this year, with a further $10,000,000" in 1965 and a 'simi- lar amount in 1966. The brief said an expanded council program would increase the number of experts in the arts, humanities and social sci- ences required by universities, government, busines and jour- nalism, create opportunities which would tend to check the drift of scholars and artists to other countries.
