10 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Mondey, Merch 2, 1964 Boston Bruins Win Two Over Week-End But It's Too Late. By THE CANADIAN PRESS Boston Bruins are en route to their best season since 1959- 60. But, unfortunately, they'll. still wind up out of the National 5Hockey League playoffs. The last-place Bruins shaded Detroit 2-1 and downed Toronto 5-3 in weekend games to record their 15th and 16th victories of the campaign--two more than last season and one better than the two previous years. Boston, however, was doomed to finish out of the post-season playoffs when Detroit tied New York 2-2 Sunday night, register- ing a precious point that math- ematically eliminates the Bru- ins. The fourth-place Wings now lead Boston by 17 points' and the Bruins have only eight games left. Fifty-place New York is 10 points beliind with nine games remaining and their playoff chances now are relegated to the "slim" category. HAWKS SHARE FIRST 17:42 of the third period after the Canadiens had fought from behind twice to tie. Stan Mikita scored Chicago's other goal and assisted on Wharram's three tallies to take a six-point lead in the individual scoring race, He has 80 points, six better than teammate. Bobby Hull and nine ahead of Mont- real's Jean Beliveau. ,Wharram gave the Hawks a 2-0 first-period lead but the Habs came back on tallies by Gilles Tremblay and Henri Ri- chard at the start of the sec- ond. Mikita then scored but Ralph. Backstrom tied it again at 1:27 of the finale. WHARRAM GETS WINNER The Canadiens seemed headed for a precious tie when Whar- ram scored his 36th of the sea- son, banging in a passout from Ab McDonald. The Hawks have seven games left, including one more clash with Montreal, while the Cana- diens have nine remaining. Wharram also tallied Satur- lead and Toronto never got closer than two goals away. Pulford, Red Kelly and Mc- Kenney scored for the Leafs. Oliver scored at 8:49 of the final period Saturday night to give the Bruins a 2-1 over De- troit. Norm Ullman has given the Wings a 1-0 lead in the first but Boston rookie Don Schock tied Vt With his first NHL go: in the second period, 2 DUFF SCORES TWO The Wings rallied Sunday night on Parker MacDonald's goal with less than five minutes remaining to tie the Rangers 2-2.
