THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, February 28, 1964 Crome Recalls Rapid Growth By FRED CROME City Engineer The population the year Osh- awa became a city was 16,659 and this increased rapidly in the boom of the twenties to 25,550 in 1929. During the depression the population declined and it was not until the war years that the population again reached the level of 1929. The population exceeded 26,000 in 1941 but re- mained almost constant until the end of the war. A steady growth developed after the war and on the eve of annexation at the beginning of 1951, the popu- lation of the old city was 29,771. Annexation added 8,126 to bring the population to 37,897. In the 13 years since annexation, the population has increased to 65,- 677. of surface treated roads and 50 miles of gravel roads, making a total of 179 miles of roads. From 1951 to 1963, the road mileage has increased by 58 miles. We hae paved 24 miles of roads and surface treated 65 miles and we have reduced the mileage of gravel roads from 81 miles to 50 miles. SIDEWALKS From 1951 to 1963, a total of 56 miles of sidewalk has been constructed, which has_ in- creased the total mileage in the City by 60 per cent from 94! miles to 150 miles. SEWERS In 1951, there were a total of 52 miles of sanitany sewers in the City. From 1951 to 1963 we have constructed 106 miles of} sanitary sewer at a cost of FRED CROME Western Tire Service Tops A self - service department Glecoff's Fine Firm 'Save more at Braemore' is the slogan of Mitchell Glecoff, proprietor of the most modern and up-to-date independent store in Oshawa.
