THE OSHAWA TIMES, Weanesdey, Februsry 26, 1964 7 'Peyton Place' Writer Dies BOSTON (AP) -- Grace Metalious, who said she wrote] the controversial novel Peyton Place because she was hungry and thus won five years of pros- erererend loneliness, is dead at 39. Entering Beth Israel Hospital Sunday night, she died Tuesday. The hospital said death came from chronic liver disease, Monday night she dictated to' a Boston lawyer the closing paragraphs of her will. Lawyer John F, Cremens withheld the will's contents. Her life was as crowded with drama as that of any of the characters in her books: Pey- ton Place, Return to Peyton Place, The Tight White Collar and No Adam in Eden. MARRIED AT 17 Born Grace DeRepentigny in Manchester, N.H., she married her schoolboy sweetheart, George Metalious, when they were 17--just after high school graduation, George became a Second World War artilleryman; And Grace turned out dozens of short stories and threw them all into a trunk in their early lean years as three children came along. ; She continued her unpublished writing while she, her husband and three children subsisted on $120 a month in his student days at the University of New Hamp- shire. They had achieved the rela- tive prosperity of a $3,000 gram- mar school principal's salary and a $35-a-month house in Gil- manton, N.H., when, after two rejections, an agent persuaded a New York publisher to print Peyton Place in 1958. LOST JOB Grace said it was a compo- site picture of small town life. And George Metalious lost his principal's job, Grace said: "To a tourist these towns look as peacefu} as a post card picture, but if you go beneath that picture it's like turning 'over a rock with your foot, All kinds of strange things crawl out." In the wake of her movie- born, $500,000 prosperity came divorce--first from George in 1958, next from disc jockey T. J.}. (Jack) Martin. Then came re- marriage to George in 1960 and --last October -- separation again. Gilmanton folk denied George's separation from the town school system had any- thing to do with Peyton Place. But Grace said: "To a major- ity of people who live here, it is a dirty book. People suddenly decided that George is not the Bip to teach sweet, innocent children."
