THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tusedey, February 11, 1964 15 Feud Wiping Out Watutsi Tribes KIGALE, Rwanda (AP)--The towering Watutsis of Rwanda tace the threat of extermination by Bahutu tribesmen, who for centuries were their slaves. Whe else of the Watesle--muany e of whom stand seven feet tall-- but 10 times their number. Thousands of Watutsis were driven out of Rwanda by a Ba- hutu olt four years ago. Now ft ical Watutsi warriors -- called the country from its new rulers. Their attacks touched off a massacre of Watutsi families remaining in Rwanda. It may never be known how many died in the Bahutu reprisals, Mis- sionaries here estimate the -- between 10,000 and 20,- SHOT IN BUSH Missionaries' accounts say Bahutus, backed by Rwanda's Belgian-officered army of some 1,200 men, drove truckloads of Watutsi men, women and chil- dren into the bush, made them dig their own graves, then shot them. One Watutsi priest was dragged from his church during a Christmas Day service and hhacked to pieces. His blood- staines robes were tossed among the congregation. Then his wife and children were seized. Their heads were tied to their. knees and they were thrown in tlhe river to drown. The servant of a British mis- sionary saw her father, brother and bridegroom, a _ teacher, slaughtered on her wedding day. She was raped. A truck driver told how he had been forced to take 20 Wa- tutsis into the bush for execu- tion. One, he said, conducted a last service for the victims and they were shot as they knelt to pray. / FEAR REPRISALS Missionaries who tell of the carnage refuse to permit their names to be published for fear of reprisals against Negro members of their congrega- tions. Rwanda's prisons are re ported jammed with Watutsis. Several churchmen here ac- cuse President Gregoire Kayi- banda's government of using the Watutsi raitls as an excuse! for genocide. "You have a republican re- gime here based on racialism," said one. "They know they are not strong and they are afraid. They look on every Watutsi.as @ potential enemy. "Many of these Watutsis are educated and cultured' people! and the educated ones have suf- fered most. It seems the Bahu- tus are trying to eliminate ev- ery potential Watutsi leader," WERE VICTORS Bahutu fear and hatred of the Watutsis go back a long way. The Watutsis, brown - skinned aristocrats said by some to be descended from Egypt's Phar- oahs, conquered the Bahutu--a pure-blooded Negro tribe--five centuries ago and became the often being carried about on litters by Bahutu slaves, who did all the work on farms, The Watutsis, who wore spot- less white togas, refused to work at all. Even 90, they were formidable athletes and there are written records to show that some, running and jump- ing from a_ foot-high mound, could clear heights over eight feet. Churchmen here would like to see some form of international intervention enabling surviving Watutsis in Rwanda to leave the country. Rwanda government officials acknowledge privately that many Watutsis have been killed but declare that if Watutsi at- tacks from outside the country ceased there would be no more) trouble. | | Smoking Habit Hooks Students Principals Say CHICAGO (AP)--Many Amer-| ican high school students are) habitual smokers and it's al-| most an even bet that the re-/ cent government report linking| cigaretes and lung center won't) discourage the habit. That is the opinion of high school principals attending a national convention here, given in response to an Associated Press questionnaire. Almost two-thirds of the prin-| cipals surveyed said that from 20 to 60 per cent of their stu- dents smoke regularly. More than one-quarter place the fig- ure at 40 per cent or more. The principals were asked: "From your observations, do) you believe the government re- | port has tended to discourage student smoking?" Fifty-six per cent sald "yes," #4 per cent said '"'no." Virtually all the principals reported their schools regularly provide classroom instruction about the dangers of smoking. N.Y.
