Years ago, it didn't matter who was the referee -- or even if they had one -- because in those days Canada always won the hockey ditle in a breeze. But not any more -- now we've got several of the European countries in serious contention with Russia and Canada, for the hockey crown -- and what happens. Well -- just like here in Canada, for years -- they start to be critical. It's something new for Olympic Games -- but to- day we find that several of the teams are raising a "beef" about the referees -- claiming the calibre of officials is below the standard required for hockey at its present level. And on top of that, some are objecting to "soft ice" conditions. It all adds to the zest of the competition even if it is a bit disturbing to the dignity and decorum preferred by Avery Brundage. Meanwhile, Canadian hockey fans are wondering if Father Dave Bauer's boys are good enough to win their next two games -- Canada plays the Czechs and then the Russians, on successive days. Haven't seen the Canadian team in ac- tion personally ,so we hesitate to voice an opinion, although we have been getting the impression this past few days that they have been playing up to their dpposition -- showing as much as was needed to win -- and not extending themselves too much. The last-place club had the Osh- @wa boys on the ropes at one stage but the Generals came to life in time and went on to win the two points that per- haps they had already counted before the game.
