Sparks Fly Over New Auditor Bill OTTAWA (CP) -- A minor government bill to appoint a new auditor for the CNR and TCA sparked a heated debate in the Commons Tuesday night after someone used that explo- sive word "patronage." The measure would appoint the chartered accountants firm of Ross, Touche and Company to handle the annual audits, which draw a fee ranging be- tween $100,000 and $120,000. The measure, in effect, dis- misses J. A. Delalanne, who was named CNR-TCA auditor by the former Conservative government in 1958, After the hour-long storm died, down, the bill went through sec- ond reading and clause - by-jhi clause stages. It needs only third reading before moving to the Senate. The move was questioned by Conservative, NDP and Credit- iste MPs, who said they saw no reason why the 'CNR auditors should change whenever there was a change of government. E. J. Benson, parliamentary secretary to Finance Minister' Gordon, said at first he did not firm had handled the CNR audit most: of the time since 1923 and was more experienced. The official said the spiritual ruler of the world's 550,000,000 Roman Catholics informed Ath- enagoras about the purpose of his Holy Land trip and in doing so indicated a willingness to meet the patriarch in Palestine if Athenagoras decides to go there. In announcing his unprece- dented trip a week ago, Pope Paul said. he hoped it would serve the cause of Christian unity. Athenagoras, who gave up his American citizenship to become spiritual leader of 150,000,000 Orthodox Christians, proposed last Friday that a Christian summit meeting be held during the Pope's visit. The official said the Pope made no mention in his letter of Athenagoras's proposal for a conference of Christian leaders. tt the official] said the letter in effect a reply to Athe- MONTREAL (CP) -- Profes- sor Roland Haumont proposed marriage to an attractive 20- year-old blonde a few months before his wife and two daught- ers were killed in an explosion last October, the girl said Tues- day. Her testimony came at the preliminary hearing of Profes- sor Haumont, 42, on a charge of capital murder. Judge Claude Wagner asked that the identity of the girl be withheld. The girl said Haumont, her former teacher at Harpur Col- lege, Binghampton, N.Y., gave her two rings and promised to marry her in five years, after his children grew up. But their relationship was broken off last September, she said, a month before a propane gase explosion levelled the Hau- mont's rented home in west-end Montreal Oct. 20.
