Q THE OSHAWA TIMAS, Soturdey, November 30, 1963 Grace of Generosity treme poverty, have pressed gifts on him for the poor Christians of ealem.--II Corinthians 8:1 ILLUSTRATED SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON He sends his fellow disciple, Titus, and two other church members back from Macedonia to Corinth, Jeru- 5. finish the collection which was begun there the previous year for Jerusa- lem.--II Corinthians 8:16-24. s0 they may the Corinthians that the person who sows sparingly will also reap spar- ingly, and the person who sows boun- tifully will also reap bountifully.-- Il Corinthians 9:6. "God loveth a cheerful giver," he tells them. "And God is able to make all grace abound toward you," providing enough so they might do His works. --II Corinthians 9:7-15. GOLDEN TEXT: II Corinthians 8:7. BIBLE LESSON Need Of Church Cited By Paul By N. SPEER JONES The immediate situation around which this lesson based is the collection taken up by the apostle Paul for the members of the Christian church in Jerusalem. Reference is made to this collection in I Corinthians 16, Romans 15:25- 33, and Acts 24:17. Indirect ref- erence is also made to the needs of this church in Acts 4:32-37, where we see how the Jerusa- lem members banded together for their mutual aid, attempt ing a form of communal living. Why was it that the church in Jerusalem, out of all the newly ~ founded Christian churches in various cities, was the one church which seemed to be do desperately needy? As Philip Hughes points out in his recently published "Com- mentary on the Second Epistle to the Corinthians," the Chris- tian church in Jerusalem was situated in the stronghold of Judaism. It was surrounded by "Jewish fervor and exclusiv- ism," which must have made the Christian converts the vic- tims of "social and economic ostracism, ecclesiastical excom- munication and national disin- heritance." In addition to his immediate motivation for the relief of these people, Paul uses the situ- ation to preach other spiritual truths to the Corinthians. These two chapters constitute the long- est section in the Bible on the subject of giving. Paul begins his plea by hold- ing up the example of the; churches immediately to the north of Corinth, in Macedonia; the only ones we know of there were in Philippi, Thessalonica and Berea. Paul was in this area at this time. HEBRON end ZION Christian Reformed Churches of Oshawa It was apparently an excep- tionally poor area, for (see Il Corinthians 8:3, 4) Paul seem- ingly had not even asked the members there to contribute; rather, they begged him to al- low them to. donate. When Paul discovered this, he sent Titus back to Corinth to finish the collection there, which had been begun the previous ar, but never completed (8:6, 16-24, 9:1-5). With him went two others. The most profound part of this lesson is touched in 8:9, where /Paul implies the pre-existence of Christ. He does not elaborate on this truth, either here or elsewhere, but presumes its ac- ceptance. As Hughes says, "Thus Jesus Christ is the Son who was sent, the One who came into the world, the Word who became flesh, the Lord who for our sakes, impoverished Himself." Christ, having been rich, became poor so that we might be rich. With such an example before us, how can. we fail to be gen- erous? How, too, when we re- member the law of sowing and reaping (9:6), and that "He that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness." (9:10). GOLDEN TEXT "Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also." --II Corinthians 8:7.
