Oshawa Vikings And Toronto 'Old Boys In Rugger Classic Oshawa Vikings battle the highly-rated Toronto Old Boys, Boys tomorrow afternoon, for the On- tario Provincial Rugger Cham- pionship, This outstanding game, with the winner to re- ceive The Carling Trophy, will be played at Eglinton Park, in Toronto and has a 1.00 p.m. scheduled kickoff. Vikings, pennant-holders of the Eastern Conference, entered the sudden-death finals by de feating Aurora Yorks of the Northern Conference last week 13 to 5. The Old Boys, champs of the Central Conference over- powered Oakville of the Western Conference 11 to 3. OLD BOYS FAVORED Numerous rugger followers of Ontario rugger are predicting a victory for the Old Boys on the basis of their spectacular rec- ord in league play. The Green and Red have won ten-straight starts this season and have given up one try while amass- ing 152 points. The try, which was scored by the Welsh Club, was the first time that they have had their goal line crossed in league play for over two years. In the past two seasons, Old Boys have been unbeatable in their own league, only to enter the playoffs crippled and with- out reserves. Last year they could only field 14 limping bodies for the Ontario finals and lost 11-8 to Hamilton with seven of their stars watching from the The great strength of the Old lies mainly in their back- field, one of the best in Ontario rugger, including the Senior league. Such players as inside centre Bill McMurtry, scrum half Dr. Bob Murray from Glas- gow University, 210-pound John McMurtry, ex-star of Calgary Stampeders, and Ed Wood, a 10-second 100-yard runner, com- bine to give them probably the most potent running attack in Ontario. But the Old Boys' backfield will also be facing an excellent Viking combination led by Big Dave Nicholishen, one of the hardest running backs in On- tario, Nicholishen will be sup- ported by the broken-field run- ning of Captain Tom Farquhar- son, Ron McKnight, and Ted McLean and the passing of Bill Lockwood and scrum half Keith Williams. Additional scouting reports of the Old Boys indicate that the scrum is the team's biggest problem. This weakness was created with the serious in- juries to star forwards Dave Wallmark and Roger Brown. But Old Boys are still counting on two more McMurtry brothers, Bob and Roy (ex-Var- sity Blue great and captain) to plug some of their weaknesses. Oshawa Vikings will have a decided advantage over their opponents in any scrums and lineouts. Their scrum, led by the capable Eric Nielsen, com- pletely dominated last Satur- sidelines. day's game against Aurora. In addition it will be bolstered by the return of Ron Lace and Tom Olinyk in the lineup. Lace is fill- ing in for Ken Gibson while' Olinyk moves back in place of Jerry McKnight. Other mem- bers in the scrum will be Tom Chaszewski, Wayne Voege, Gar- ney Gunn, and Bruce McArthur. The Viking forwards hope to equal last Saturday's unbeliev- able record of gaining posses- sion of the ball from lineouts and scrums 80 per cent of the time. KICKING DUEL One of the game's features) should 'be the keen duel be- tween two of Ontario's top kick- ers, Boris Tamoshewski of Old' Boys and Terry Kelly of Vikings are both expected to gain valu- able yards and points from their City League HOCKEY ACTION Hockey Dates For Next Week Oshawa Minor Hockey Asso- ciation Game Schedule: Monday, Nov, 25 -- 5.00-5.50, Houdaille Ind. vs Local 1500; 6.00-6.50, Canadian Corp. vs Du- plate; 7.00-7.50, Police Assoc. vs B'Nai B'Rith; 8.00-8.50, Local 1817 vs Westmount Kiwanis; 9.00-9.50, Local 2784 vs Coca All Star Practice. GAUGE AND GAME Winter Months Time Repair Fishing Gear By KEN ROBERTS rod is completely dry before casing and winter storage. Now that the hunting is well under way, just look back for a moment and think. Now let's see -- 'What shape did I leave my fishing tackle in fiberglass, consequently they feel the need for rod care has ended. How untrue. While most! of the headaches of bamboo rod maintenance are gone, still details remain such as furls, guides, windings. These three things should be looked after. Check the furls for rust, is it fit, free from grime build-up? Coat it lightly with a good reel oil, Check the guides for worn runways, replace if necessary. Here again a light coating of oil will repel rust. Windings can be re-varnished or, if too badly worn, replacement thread is available at most sporting goods outlets. If you have one of the more common reels, spinning or cast- ing, repair kits are available. However, getting some kits might require a bit of hunting, so get out early, don't be caught this spring. When cleaning the reel, ordi- nary kerosene and an old tooth brush are all you need. When all work is complete coat the parts with reel grease. Don't overgrease, just enough to lubri- cate and protect from rust. During the season the matter of lubrication should never be overlooked. This refers parti- cularly to the bait caster. Ard- ent anglers see the merit in a near friction-free reel. Under hard fishing and constant use, oiling every hour on the main here is, to make sure the wind- ings are on snug, and close to- gether.
