About one-third of the 1,722,- 000 square feet of exhibition space for the 1964-65 New York world's fair now is under roof. "We're going right along on schedule," said a fair spvkes- man surveying the 646-acre ex- position site from atop a_heli port more than 100 feet above the ground. "Three months ago if you had climbed up here, that below would have looked like a bombed out city," he said. "Now look. She's taken shape. She really looks tke some thing." : His words were true. The site did look like something But the average viewer would be hard pressed to say what. The world's fair is shaping into the fantastic fairyland its designers planned. when _ they put their sweeping lines to the drawing board many months ago. SOME ROUGH SPOTS But the progress has not been entirely over smooth ground. There were labor stoppages and threats of more to come. The racial issue threatened several times to bog down work as civil rights demonstrations vowed to camp on the site unless more Negroes were hired. With just about six months be- fore the exposition opens its gates for a two-year run, most of the major pavilions are well along toward completion. Many of the halls, such as the huge, multi - million dollar of the General Mo- tors, Ford and Chrysler automo- bile companies, already house 'costly exhibitions. Some of the smaller exhibi- tion halls, particularly those of the more than 40 foreign coun- tries to be represented, still are only in the foundation stage. 'For the most part these exhi- bition halls are being prefabri- cated in the foreign country and will be shipped here for assem- bly on the site," the spokesman said. "In such cases, once the foundation is in, it might take only a few weeks to set them up." Twenty-four states, including six grouped together as the New England states, will occupy pa- vilions, - The federal government, New York State and New York City also will have separate pavil- ions, displaying what each has contributed toward making the fair theme--"peace through un- derstanding"--a meaningful slo. gan. TOOLS NEEDED BY BOYS' CLUB Simcoe Hall Boys' Club is preparing to launch an ac- tive Art. and Crafts pro gram.
