HOLLER FOR HELP Cardinals Must Stop Jim Brown ST. asa ag _ we do stop Jimmy Brown, Cleve- aah Browns' one-man offence? "Tackle him above the waist and holler for help or he'll drag you to death," says Ed Henke, defensive end and assistant coach of St. Louis Cardinals who played at one time for Cal- gary Stampeders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Western Football Conference. The Cards meet the Browns at Cleveland Sunday in a Na- tional Football League game that could have a bearing on the Eastern Division championship. Cardinal coach Wally Lemm has his own ideas about Brown, who leads the NFL in yards gained with 1,293 and average yardage per carry with 7.1. "High school kids are taught to tackle at knee level,' Lemm said. "'But they don't have to Raymond Likes Hot Weather For Pitching ST. JEAN, Que. (\P) -- Be- spectacled Claude Raymond has been looking at his baseball fu- ture through rose colored glasses ever since he was ob- tained by Houston Colts in the National League's help-the-poor draft last month. The reason? He likes to pitch in hot weather. Raymond, a French-Canadian from this city where the tem- perature sometimes dips to 40 below zero, was acquired from Milwaukee in the special draft of National League players by the Colts and New York Mets. "I started my pro career in West Palm Beach, Fla., and then moved up to Jacksonville. It was pretty hot in those places and I had good seasons," Ray- mond said Wednesday. "Later, I pitched for the old Wichita (Kan.) team in the American Association. It was so hot there you could have fried eggs on the sidewalk." PLEASED BY MOVE The 26-year-old right-hander also is pleased about his acqui- sition by Houston because some of his former Brave teammates, including pitcher Don Nottebart and outfielder Al Spangler, are members of the Colts. "In a way, I would have liked tackle Brown. He's one guy it doesn't work on. He has to be gang-tackled 90 per cent of the time." MUST STOP BROWN Regardless of how it's done, St. Louis must stop Brown if it expects to stay in the Eastern Division race. The second-place Cards, a game behind dead- locked Cleveland and New York Giants, have done better than anyone thought they would be- fore the season started. "The next three games will tell the story for us," Lemm said. St. Louis will face Cleveland twice in the next three games with the Giants sandwiched in between. Cleveland and New York have 7-2 marks and St. Louis is next with 6-3. Brown accounts for much of Cleveland's success. The only times he has been stopped this season was in Cleveland's losses to Pittburgh and New York. When he rolls, so does Cleve- land--and he has rolled for an average of 144 yards a game. His own one-season record of 1,527 -yards in 1958 appears a cinch to fall. "Brown gives Cleveland tre- mendous ball control," Lemm said, '"'And Collier (Coach Blan- ton Collier of Cleveland) has in- troduced a lot of man-for-man blocking where the offensive lineman can block his man ei- ther way and then let Brown pick out the best hole. "Brown's a great pick-a-hole OTTAWA (CP) -- Linebacker Jack Nichols is expected to be the only player missing from the lineup of Ottawa Rough Riders Saturday when they take on Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the opener of the two-game, total- points Eastern Football Contfer- ence finals. And Nichols probably would play if the Ottawa coaches felt that Bill Quinter couldn't ade- quately fill in at the defensive post. Line coach Bill Smyth said Wednesday the club feels it would be better for Nichols to sit out the Saturday game and then be ready for an all-out performance when the series concludes next week in Hamil- ton. Coach Frank Clair is to make a definite announcement on other injured players Friday. "But at this time of year, all you can do is play your hurts," he said Wednesday. 'Everyone else is hurting some, too."' Halfback Ron Stewart, who All Riders But Nichols Ready For Tiger Cats Ernie White, Bob Larry Degraw, Roger 'Kramer and Bill Siekierski. Kramer Leads NFL Scorers NEW YORK (AP) -- Jerry Kramer, the man who took over Paul Hornung's place kicking job with Green Bay Packers, is the new leader in the National Football] Léague scoring race with 75 points on 15 field goals and 30 converts. Kramer' passed Cleveland's Jimmy Brown Sunday by kicking four extra points against Minnesota Vikings while Brown was held scoreless by Pitts- burgh Steelers. Brown has 72 on 12 touchdowns, He is the only non - kicker among the first seven in scoring. Brown still is way out 'front in the rushing department with 1,293 yards, almost twice as many as Jim Taylor of Green Bay, who is second with 676. With five games to go, Brown is almost a cinch to break his own league record of 1,527 set in 1958. Y. A.
