Sister Beatrice gave a short talk to the parents in which she quoted Bishop George Beck, who as chairman. of the Catho- lic Education Council of Eng- land told delegates that the "teacher is the agent and Auxiliary of the parent in the work of education. If a child is to grow harmoniously to balanc- ed maturity, home and school must work hand in hand as far as possible without stress or ten sion,-above ali without creating a division 'of loyalties in the mind of the child." Monsignor P. Dwyer, in a short address to the meeting, also stressed the need of the parents to support the authority| 4 jof the teacher and warned jagainst the dangers of tearing jdown the teacher's image in of front of the child. As part of the evening's pro- gram a film on citizenship was |presented, which raised the con- |troversial question "'How much responsibility does each citizen have towards his community?" Mrs, A. Strachan (chairman of the program committec), in- troduced Mr. William O'Neill, who acted as chairman of the discussion which followed the showing of this film. VINCENT MASSEY H-S The October meeting of Vin- cent Massey Home and School Association was in the form of "Curriculum Night and the au- ditorium was needed to accom- modate the attendance of. par- ents The guests were welcomed by Mrs. N. V. Roe, president, who presented the Vincent Mas- sey winners in the Red Feather Public Speaking Contest. cenny Arvay spoke first, on the Salvation Army followed by the senior winner, Jane Forbes, speaking on the Girl Guide Movement. The parents were told of the participation again this year of the Vincent Massey pupils in the UNICEF program. An- nouncement was also made of the intention of revising our by- laws and a committee has been set up for this purpose under the direction of Mrs. Gordon G:-rison. These changes will be brought to the general mem- bership for their approval at the next meeting. The new room representatives were introduced as follows: Grade 7 and 8, Mrs. Vance Cooper; Grade 6 and 7, Mrs. A. B. Smith; Grade 5 and 6, Mrs. H. R. Manning; Grade 4 and 5, Mrs. Rae Rundle; Grade 4, Mrs. Donald Hoy; Grade 3, Mrs. Donald Dwyer; Grade 2 and 3, Mrs. Earl Han- cock; Grade 1 and 2, Mrs. Arthur Stone; Grade 1, Mrs. Ronald Bone; kindergarten a.m., Mrs. James Bienick; Y kindergarten p.m., Mrs. Bruce L' Aster. Mr. Gerald Harper, principal, then spoke briefly to the par- ents explaining the purpose . of the "curriculum night"? which enables the teachers to give the parents an outliae of the work they 'expect to cover during the coming year. Mr. Harper. also announced that this year a change has been made in the system of sending out report ecards. These will go out in December, March and June. Interim reports will be intro- duced this year, enabling the parents to keep track of the pupil's progress and also giv- ing the teachers an opportunity to point out. any. weak points that may need the help. and encouragement of the parents. The parents then adjourned to the different classrooms where they spent the next half hour learning the curriculum of the individual grades. At the end of this time, the guests re- turned to the auditorium where they were served refreshments, the highlight of which was the 4th anniversary cake. Miss Carol McGirr, a member of the staff of Vincent Massey since its opening, and a charter,mem- ber of the Home and School Association, had the honor of cutting the cake. Refreshments were provided and served by the mothers of Grade 4 and Grade 1 and 2 under grade mothers, Mrs. D. Hoy and Mrs. A. Stone and social con- vener, Mrs. Bert A, McCarl.
