Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Kratz, Division street, Miss Kratz is in Ger- many on a scholarship from the German Government which provided a summer course in Hamburg Univer- sity and the opportunity to teach English in Germany for one year. Editor's note. Dear Miss Connolly: Greetings from Germany! It's a wonderful country full of won- derful people, and I scarcely know. where to begin telling about it. I spent rather of a vagabond summer, travelling mainly in the southern part of the country, Then in- August I took a summer course in Ham- burg. The course itself was not the most thrilling expetience imaginable, We were fed huge indigestible lumps of phonetics, and our endurance was rather strained by lectures which sometimes ran more than two hours, but the people again were wonderful, and Hamburg is a wonderful city, not losing its big-city cultural side even in summer. The theatres were open, and there was just too much to do; _in three weeks one could not see or do all one would have liked. 'While the north lacks perhaps «some of the Gemutlichheit of the "south, it is more intellectual and walso, I believe, more cultural. In Hamburg, you can always find an organ concert, with a good organist playing on an his- torical instrument in an ancient church; these concerts are often free, and when not free, the ad- « mission fee is a mere pittance. "It is moving to hear Bach, for + example, being well played on ean organ which Bach himself «used, But enough of the North! I'm back in the south again and love|! ~dt here too. thusiastically and grammatical- ly in English, with an astound- ingly extensive vocabulary. Then there are also the senior classes, with boys bigger than myself, and, in a few cases, ac- tually as old, if not older. It is most interesting to be at three schools. They are ail so different, yet enough alike to avoid too much _ confusion. Selingthal, the convent school, is a gentle place, where the girls are made into ladies. ACCEPT DISCIPLINE There is no discipline problem there at all. The Gymnasium is perhaps the most restless of the three schools, my first time there I-had the impression that everyone was running around in circles, The Oberrealschule re- minds me' rather of the OCVI. It is a little more relaxed and easy-going than the Gymnasium on the part of both teachers and pupils, The classes, however, I prefer in the Gymnasium up to now at least. The pupils there are more boisterous and noisy, and seem to have much more enthusiasm that the Seligenthal girls, certainly. Actually I can- not say much about the Ober- realschule yet, as there I have done little more than visit the classes, and have noi taken a full class on my own there. Luckily, however, my first venture into a German class- room was not a class visit, but a direct jump into teaching, with the teacher sitting in the back row, Never having taught any- thing in my life, I was, as you can imagine, more than a little apprehensive. But all went fair- ly well, and after that first les- son I had already begun -- there was nothing to be nervous about. It's almost a parallel situation to jumping into a swimming pool rather than going through a half-hour routine of gradual immersion. MUNICH OKTOBERFEST Life in Landshut ,is very peaceful, but it is rather lack- ing, unfortunately, on the cul- tural side.
