SPEER JONES The place of one's physical self in a Christian life is the topic of this week's lesson, which continues with the study of Paul's first letter to the Cor- inthians. A supplementary passage is taken from the Sermon on the Mount, broadening the scope of the material covered by Paul in his letter. The former deals with feeding and clothing the spent in the seeking or service of God. The "'lilies of the field," inci- dentally, are thought to be the Palestine ane mone or wind- flower, most brilliant and pro- fuse in that area. Corinth, located on the isth- mus of the same name which connects the Peloponnesus or southern peninsula of Greece with the~ northern mainland, was a natural cosmopolitan cen- tre which became famed for its GOLDEN TEXT "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the _ Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye . Therefore glorify God in your body. are not your own? . --I Corinthians 6:19, 20. body, functions which are cer- tainly important, and Christ does not mean here to deny their importance or to say that we should do-nothing to provide for these essentials, His mean- ing is certainly not "the world owes me a living." Rather, He means that we must try not to devote an un- due amount of attention to food and clothing; we must not be fretful and anxious about them or make them our main centre of attention. The Greek word which is translated here as anxiety comes from a verb meaning "to divide" or "distract." How many women devote needless hours to petty thoughts about what they will wear or what they will eat! How much more luxury and vice. Even the term "Corinthian" came to mean a profligate and '"'to Corinthian- ize' meant to have dealings with a prostitute. Worship of Venus, goddess of love, was a marked part of the city's life. Paul's famous de- scription of pagan vice in Ro- mans 1:18-32 was written in Corinth. The Isthmian games held here only served to aug- ment the city's sinfulness. Paul in his letter urges the church members to cast out from them thosé known to be living in sin; even Roman law forbade the cohabitation with one's stepmother which is men- tioned specifically. He further urges that they have no social dealings with adulterers, extortioners or ido- valuably this time might be lators. Business dealings with immoral people cannot always be avoided, but we need not seek out their company socially. NEWS IN BRIEF HEBRON end ZION ST. One's body is the Lord's, and should be treated as His tem- ple. It is also a member of Christ, and should be used ac- cordingly.
