Thomas Edwards, NDP can- didate in the forthcoming pro- vincial election, along with sev- eral of his campaign workers visited this small community and spent the night in tents. "We spent the night like this," he said, "because our. financial resources are slender and we can't afford lavish accommoda- tions but we wanted to meet people in the northern end of the riding." ' When asked how the night was spent sleeping outside, Mr. driven by William Charles Dob- son, 25 Thorncroft crescent, Ajax, was unscathed in the mishap while the 1963 convert- ible was a total wreck. When the girls saw what was going to happen they ducked their heads and then climbed out of the entanglement un- injured when the transport stopped. To date, Americans have com- pleted 34 earth orbits while So- viet cosmonauts have accomp- lished 259. . Addison M. Rothrock of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration told the Iowa Daily Press Association Satur- day that "by the time our three astronauts leave for the moon- landing we as a nation will have accumulated 2,000 flight hours in earth orbit of manned craft. "To indicate to you the sig- nificance of this summer--we have as of now less than five flight hours of manned aircraft at speeds in excess of mach 2.5 -- 2% times the speed of sound," Rotherock, associate director of NASA's plans and program evaluation, said that in addi- tion to having orbited the earth 1,300 times in 2,000 hours, '"'men will have gone to and from craft in orbit." "We will have rendezvoused and inspected craft and trans- ferred men and material be- tween craft," he said. The next day, he said, we visited farms and homes in the Washago, Udney, Brechin and Beaverton areas and told peo- ple about the party, some of whom had not heard of the NDP party's existence, however, we found them very receptive. "All the people we visited," Mr. Edwards said, "'agreed this was something of a novel twist in a so far dreadfully dull elec- tion. By CLIFF GORDON Ivan Davie, the hard working manager of the Whitby Dun- lop Jr. Hockey Club is on the move along the ice lanes again. He also is very busy helping to entertain the western lacrosse boys. Thursday night of this week, Mr. Davie attended a meeting of the Metro Jr. B_ hotkey league in Toronto. The purpose was to line up the teams that would be competing in the league this year. There was a fine representation of clubs at the meeting. When it had all been thrashed out no less than 11 entries were assured. The league will be divided into two divisions, the western division and the eastern divi- sion, of which the Whitby Dun- lops will be an entry, western league will be comprised of Brampton, George- town, Etobicoke, Lakeshore, and Weston. The Eastern league will be made up of five teams, Schom- Quebec government has full res- ponsibility."" One thing for sure the fans cannot say they are sick of seeing the same team too often. Manager Davie also announe- ed that most of the Whitby home games will be on Mon- day nights, as against Tuesday night in the past few years. There were a number of things that prompted the 10¢ a1 man- ager to make the change. The opening home game will |be at the Whitby Arena Mon- | day, Oct. 28 when the St. Mikes |team will be the visitors. It is | expected that the local team will open its training camp about the first of October. The local manager plans on at least four to six exhibition games before the teams get down to serious playing. | The playoff set. will be the top four teams in each league in the playoffs, with the win- ners meeting in a best of seven for: the league champion- ship and the right to advance in the all Ontario playdowns, In all it looks like another banner year of hockey is just around the corner for the fans in this area. le LS Need back-to-school cash?
