HOWD Mayor Decries Welfare Abuse ALMONTE, Ont, (CP)--Town council voted Tuesday night to require welfare recipients to choose between liquor and food vouchers from the town. Aroused by what he called & flagrant abuse of welfare, Mayor Arthur Smith proposed that all persons on relief be placed on the prohibited list of the Liquor Control Board of On- tario in future, His motion was passed unanimously. Mayor Smith said a couple with 10 children complained to the town Saturday that there was no food in the house, The couple received a $20 voucher for groceries and were seen in- toxicated in a local beer parlor Saturday night, he said, There are 10 Almonte famil- jes on relief at present and $ 000 has been spent on welfare se far this year, he said. Almonve is 40 miles southwest of Ottawa. Mayor Smith said the list of welfare recipients will be given to the LCBO and local bars and taverns, He had been assured by the LCBO a few years ago that such a move was legal. Pakistan May Buy Canadian A-Plant OTTAWA (CP)--Dr. I. H. Usmani, head of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Authority, met federal government officials Tuesday to discuss the possible purchase by Pakistan of a Ca- nadian-designed nuclear power plant. Pakistan is considering the construction of a 132,000-kilo. watt nuclear electric plant near Karachi. Such a plent would in- volve an expenditure of between $55,000,000 and $60,000,000, Canadian General Electric Company Limited has sub- mitted a proposal to Pakistan to build the 132,000-kilowatt plant. It's expected that this proposal will receive active consideration by Pakistan if financing ar- jfangements can be worked out with the federal government.
