The government is concerned not so much with making every one more aware of the import- ance of gum Arabic, as with im- proving the product's quality and exploitation, In view of the importance of gum Arabic in the economy of the country, the government plans to exploit and-enlarge cul- tivation of the tree from which the gum is produced. The Sudan has exported gum for hundreds of years. It is chiefly produced in the western province of Kordofan, where the gum is obtained from the acacia verke, a smail tree which survives in poor, sandy soil. Every year, between Oc- tober and February, the grey bark of the trees is tappd and the oozing gum collected. It quickly hardens on contact with the air and in this solid form is taken to the markets for auction. Sixty to 70 per cent of the gum exported is used for indus- trial or chemical purposes. Old Chalk Mine Converted Into 'Art Gallery AALBORG, Denmark (Reut) ers) -- A centuries-old chalk. mine has been converted into an exhibition gallery to display the works of one of Denmark's most prominent artists. Anders J. Bundgaard, a sculp- tor who died in 1947, created some of Denmark's most famous monuments, including Copen- hagen's Gefion Fountain, and Cymbrian bull which decorates the main street of Aalborg, cap- ital of Northern Jutland. Original models of these and other statues now can be seen in a cathedral-sized chamber more than 100 feet underground. Allied airmen were hidden there from the Gestapo ducing the Second World War, Beside 36 original Bungaard models, other decoration. con- sist of reliefs that the sculptor himself cut in the soft walls of the mine in the last years of his life. At that time he owned the disused pit and an extensive farm "'upstairs,"' The air in the mine is fresh but very cold. Even on a sum- mer day an overcoat is wel- come, Some of the artist's smaller works are displayed in mches cut into the shaft wall not far from the surface. Others follow, and finally the main chamber, where the bulk of the collection has been placed, is reached. SALLY'S SALLIES "cooking. It was terrible."
