Covers Basics Track-Field For Beginners VANCOUVER (CP) -- The basic principles of track and field for the beginner are covered in a new book by Dave Abbott, director of the Royal Canadian Legion's junior Olym- pic training program in British Columbia. The 91-page book by the Van- couver high school physical ed- ucation teacher is in lange part a collection of writings Abbott has submitted to British news- papers in the last six years. Geoff Dyson, chairman of the Legion training program, and Peter Mullins, University of British Columbia track coach, have written forewords to the book "This book fills a long-felt want in that it has been writ- ten primarily for beginners and yet gives sufficient detail of the various track and field events to be of use to. the more ex- perienced,"' Dyson writes. Mullins says: 'The author has written a clear, concise book for those who. wish to jlearn the rudimentary elements of track and field and I whole. heartedly recommend it to ath- letes of all ages." In the book Abbott takes each event in track and field and breaks it down. Then he shows, step by step, what it involves. At the conclusion of each sec- tion he lays out a suggested training program season by sea- son. Dublin - born Abbott was a foyr-letter man at Trinity Col- lege in*his home city, starring 'lin track, boxing, soccer and gymnastics before turning to teaching and coaching.
