6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesdoy, June 18, 1963 "Down to the Sea in Ships", er dinghies, cruisers, _ sail- boats or powerboats -- yes, boating is the number one re- creational activity on inland streams and rivers. From aboard a streamlined cabin cruiser, a pretty sailorette Waves greeting. Boat Can Slice Vacation Costs Safe, well-built outboard rigs are now available which com- bine low first cost and mini- mum upkeep with the highest Boating Rules For Children If yours is a boating family with some small fry mariners in the crew, it's a good idea to teach the young ones a few simple rules as well as do's and aboard the family boat. First and foremost, make it a hard and fast rule that the younger children must wear life preservers every second they're in the boat. The new life jackets designed for kids are light and colorful. The youngsters will get used to wearing them and your peace ef mind will benefit. Even when they get older, the ehildren should wear their life jackets until they know how to ewim well, "Foolin' around' has_ its place in the backyard, but not on the water. Explain to the kids that confined deck areas don't permit them to cut their eustomary capers. Ask them to walk, not run; fish, not fight. Even tots surprise their par- ents with how quickly they ab- sorb many bits of nautical lore. Encourage this; knowledge of the water is the key to safe boating. FILLE RS The cost of camping. equip- ment is nominal and the beauty of accessories the likes of sleep- bags, tents, ground covers, etc., is that they last for many years with proper care. standards of performance, ap- pearance and design, A low, easily financed invest- ment this year in boat, motor and trailer will reduce your va- cation costs considerably, and will give your whole family a variety of recreational activi- ties not only during vacation but on holidays and weekends at least seven months of the year. For example, here are the average family's requirements for safe and happy recreation on the water: a 14-foot boat, roomy enough to hold com- fortable a family of four plus lunch basket, water skis, and fishing gear; a motor in the 22 to 35 horsepower class, for brisk cruising speeds and enough power to pull one or two water skiers; a trailer to take advantage of the flexibility and maneuverability of the out- board; and such accessories as life jackets for children, buoy- ant cushions for adults, lights for night operation, fire extin- guisher and horn, For a bit more money, the average family can enjoy boat- ing in a more elaborate run- about, of fiberglass or plywood construction. The boat might be a 15 or 16-footer with uphol- stered seats, convertible top and windshield. For a sturdy 16-footer like this, a 50-horsepower motor is ideal, Plenty of power for speeds of over 35 miles per hour with a heavy load; water skiing for three or four at a time; quiet, dependable opera- tion for family cruising and fun afloat. Boat Operation Requires Rules This year, boating is expected to set new popularity records. From all indications, 1963 will see even more families join the ranks of the boating fraternity. There is no greater thrill than getting that first new boat. It sparkles and gleams and the urge to get to the water is strong. However, operating a boat for the first time and thereafter, is much like going on the highway in a car for the first time -- it takes knowl- edge of the regulations. What are the first things to learn about boating? Boating is one of the safest of all outdoor sports, but each boat operator should know and follow the rules of common sense and courtesy afloat. A boat and motor must be right for each other; neither overpowered or underpowered. The motor must also be install- ed correctly for maximum per- formance and enjoyment. One of the most important pieces of equipment in a boat is a life jacket -- one for each person aboard. This is a must item for every boat owner, old or new. The government has approved several types and brands that are readily avail- able from boat dealers. Knowing what to expect from your new boat is important. Never demand more. Load ca- pacity is a vital consideration. Know the safe occupancy of your craft -- do not overload. The booklet contains a speci- fic list of equipment that should be carried in a boat according to law and common sense. The proper anchors, paddles, gaso- line tanks and lighting systems must be given careful consider- ation. PATIO SLABS Liartdiae DkWVEY.
