© ' JO THE OSHAWA TIMES, Saturday, June 15, 1963 Cag EXCUSE ME! Politeness is hardly evident here really, as the battle for the base and the baseball goes on. Cleveland's Dick Howser is sliding safely into third base, in the 2nd inn- ing of yesterday's game in Cleveland, as Washington third baseman Marv Breeding tries to reach for the late throw. The ball seems about to hit Howser in the back. GENERALS REFUSED Dick Radatz Fogs Orioles By BOB GREEN Associated Press Sports Writer Dick Radatz is a large, burly young man who frustrates bat- ters with none of the more in- tricate, delicate weapons in a pitcher's arsenal. ° He just leans back and throws i past 'em. That's the formula the six- foot six-inch 245-pound Boston Red Sox right-hander used in two innings of spotless relief work in Boston's 5-1 conquest of slumping Baltimore Orioles Friday night. : It was his sixth save of the| season, in addition to his 6-1 won-loss record, and ran_ his string of consecutive scoreless innings to 33. | He threw 20 pitches, which) manager Johnny Pesky de-| scribed as '"'two sliders and the rest fast balls--fast, faster and" at a motion of the hand--| "zip." Chicago White Sox retained a one-game lead atop the Ameri- can League standings with a 3-2 - victory over Kansas City Ath- Senators broke the Indians' seven-game winning streak, with a 5-2 win in the first game of their doubleheader as Jim King hit a pair of two- run homers, Marlboros Accepted With Stipulation NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. John Powell grounded in:o a double play on Radatz' first offering, and Jim Gentile fouled out on the second pitch to him. Oshawa 'Tony's, winners of their last seven starts, were finally bea*en and Seven-Up Shopsy's, who had. dropped seven successive losses without a victory, finally won a game. Seven-Up Shopsy edged Tony's 7-6 in a real cliff-hanger. Else- where in the league, at Hamil- ton, Randall Roy Metals whipped Merchants, 5-2. Jack Rainbow gave up 10 hits to Tony's, in registering his first win. He walked only two and fannéd three ba'ters. 'Bev' Smith suffered his second 'loss in five decisions, allowing nine safe hits. Veteran '"'Moe" Galand led the winners at the plate with three safe hits and Phil Waters picked up a pair. Bobby Booth con- tinued to lead Tony's offensive with three safe hits. Jack "Red" MacDermaid had a pair and Danny Price a triple. The loss was the first under coach 'Jimmie' Loreno. Loreno inserted '"'Red" Gilbert at third base and his 19-year-old son Brian at first base, in a line-up shuffle, in favor of Price and MacDermaid and this seemed to} have cost him the game. 1} Tonys picked up two runs in the 4th-when Dick Gibb walked and scored on Booth's double. Jackie Cole followed with a walk and Smith singled to score Booth. Another run crossed in the 5th on back-to-back doubles by Booth and Nick Mroczeck. In the 6th MacDermaid and Cole each singled and "Red" scored on Brent Oldfield's choice play out. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' ANNUAL SCHOOL GAMES, the opportunity for literally thousands of this city's younger boys and girls to enjoy their own track-and-field version of the "Olympic Games', both as competitors, carrying their school's colors and as enthusiastic cheering sections, rooting their fellow-pupils to victory, takes place this Wednesday. As long as the weatherman co-operates, and he usually does, there'll be 24 Oshawa Public Schools participating, which will man roughly, a total of about 1,000 competitors--and there'll be another five or six thousand young spectators on hand besides. Parents, neighbors, all the adults are welcome, of course, in fact, the vast army of teachers responsible for conducting this mammoth track-and-field meet, are more than pleased to know that this big job also has an appeal for adult spectators. The members of the "Games Committee', the various 'Officials', clerks, scorers, time-keepers and judges, embraces a total of more than a hundred teachers, As that well- known TV master-of-ceremonies says, "This Is Ree- eely Big"! COLOR GALORE, plus ceremony, features the grand opening, which features a huge "March Past" with all participating. Then after Mayor Lyman Gifford has declared the official opening, the thousand or more competitors will stand and repeat their own "School Olympic Oath". School Board officials will be present and participate, of course. The program of events embraces races of various distances, including, relay events; throwing events, jumping etc. Individual awards will include special crests for the winners, as well as ribbons for Ist, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Premier awards, for which schools compete in their own groups on a rated basis, as to size, type, etc., are the coveted goals for every school's team of young athletes--total points for the school, deciding the winners. There is a special "Rose Bowl" award for each group, A, B, C and D, donated respectively by local service clubs; Kiwanis, Kinsmen, Lions and Rotary. These presentations con- clude a great day of sport, which will get under way at one o'clock sharp on Wednesday afternoon. If you enjoy watching youngsters perfom in athletics, if you enjoy enthusiasm, color, thrills, drama and even tears, (both kinds)--we recommend Alexandra Park on Wed- nesday afternoon. P.S. There's no charge! HAPPY 'THOUGHT! After you've watched The Queen's Plate run this afternoon and the colorful pres- entation made in the winner's circle, with about 30,000 on hand to see it--you might like to "dream" a little -- if one of these horses wins it. E. P. Taylor offered to sell Canebora as a yearling in 1961 for $7,500; and "Son Blue' was bought by Wilf Farr of Weston for a mere $7,500. And besides "honor and glory"--the winner of that big race today receives $54,850. Still Dreaming???
