The Brooklyn-born outfielder hit at a 400 pace with 10 hits in 25 tries in last week's games. This boosted him into third place in the batting competition| .Zima with a .329 average. He won the title last year with a .346 mark, Dick Groat of St. Louis Cardi- nals and Wes Covington of Phil- adelphia Phillies are deadlocked for the top spot at .340, Groat slipped one point with eight hits in 24 times at bat while Coging- ton dropped 11 'points with a three-for-13 performance. (CP)--Mr. and Mrs. Stanley James in- sist they got a helping hand from an obliging trout. The St. Catharines couple were fishing in Kawagama Lake, about 60 miles north- east of Orillia, when Mrs, James hooked a lake trout, using a Williams Wobbler. Her husband tried to fit a small landing net around the fish, but failed. Instead, the fish seized the handle of the net and disappeared under the boat. When it came up on the other side, Mr. James also grabbed the handle and, with the fish still clinging to it, hoisted his orize aboard. The fish weighed 22 pounds, was 38 inches long | and had @ 21-inch girth. Lloyd Percival Predicts Most | Exciting Meet | TORONTO (CP)--Lloyd Per- cival, chairman of the Toronto International Games, said Mon- day the June 25 games at Var- sity Stadium should be "the most exciting outdoor track and field meet ever held in Canada," Percival predicts an assault on the record books. He expects the first half-mile ever run un- der one minute and 48 seconds in Canada, with Toronto's Bill Crothers facing Jim Dupree of Southern Illinois and Kevin Ho- gan of California, two top United States runners who have beaten Crothers. A record had been expected in the six-mile run with Bruce Kidd of Toronto matched against Basil Heatley and Mel Batty of Britain and Peter Mc- Cardle of the United: States.
