"WHITBY And DISTRICT 'JURY DELIBERATES 3 HOURS Convicts Oshawa Trio On Bookmaking Rap A two-day trial ended in On- tario County Court, Wednesday, with three Oshawa men being convicted on conspiring to en- gage in bookmaking and record- ing and registering bets. "The petit jury of 11 men and one woman, deliberated for three hours before the guilty verdict was brought in. John Raymond Keys, 48, of the Queen's Hotel, Oshawa, James Mcliroy, 72, of 1344 King street west and Edward Harry Williams, 77 Gibbons street, Oshawa, were remanded until Monday morning for sentence. In his summation to the jury, Crown Attorney, W. Bruce Affleck said, "why is bookmak. ing an offence?" "Gambling like alcohol is un. controllabe in some men and a man usually ruins himself because of the availability of these. "They carry on a tax-free operation and in one day the three accused made $114.65 profit, tax-free. "With bookmaking they bring in the other crimes: narcotics, prostitution and assault to make those who owe money pay-off -- and then the corruption," he said. Defence Counsel, R. D. Hum- phreys, QC, told the court there wasn't enough evidence to con- vict them. "There is no evidence they sat down and made an agreement," Wouldn't Change Plea Driver Goes To Jail \ William Ernest Kitchener, 51, of 59 Eighth avenue in Wood- bridge, pleaded guilty to drunk driving in Whitby Magistrate's Court, Tuesday. : Constable Ernest Collinson of the OPP testified he was pro- ceeding along Highway 7 when he spotted a parked vehicle on the side of the road.
