| AT GREENWOOD CONSERVATION AREA Saturday, May 11. 700 Youngsters To Test Fishing Luck TORONTO -- More than' 700 Grade 7 and 8 youngsters from Metro. Toronto. and_ district schools in the eastern area will find themselves in a "'fisher- man's paradise" this coming They will take part in the 8th annual Junior Trout fishing day staged by the Metropolitan To- ronto and Region Conservation Authority as a means of pro- viding youngsters with a practi- cal appreciation of conservation practices, The fishing day will be held at the 450-acre Greenwood con- servation area, four miles north of Pickering Village, and the waters of the Duffin Creek in the fishing area will be specially stocked with trout for the occa- sion, The lucky youngsters were chosen to take part™m the event as a result of their knowledge of basic conservation, © A "conservation quiz" was held in Grades 7 and 8 of all public and separate schools in the Metro and district area east of Yonge street and some 20,000 students were eligible. C. R. Purcell, a member of the Authority's executive committee, will be chairman of the fishing day, He pointed out that the youngsters will be pro- vided with free hooks and baits for their fishing rods and poles and could keep all the fish they caught. NOT DERBY Mr. Purcell stressed that the event was 'not a fishing derby or a competition to see who could catch the most fish". "The Authority feels that the fishing day event brings a lot of boys and girls into direct con- tact with the principles of con- servation, and that they will re-| tain this during adulthood," he) said. | "'We want the children to have! a real good day in the out-) doors." | Each year, the fishing day is held alternately in the western and eastern section of Metro and district. Members of conservation clubs and fishing associations serve as volunteers to drive the youngsters to the conservation area where the fishing takes place, About 175 volunteers take part. Saturday's outing will be high- lighted by a special noontime program including aerial water- bombing demonstrations staged by the Ontario Dept. of Lands and Forests, retriever trials, an appearance by Smokey the Bear, demonstration of how to} bake fish outdoors, and a tree-| planting ceremony by some of! the children, ONO Club Donates $100 To Paint Job By OLGA HILL BLACKSTOCK -- A colorful Agriculture _ Rep Attends Audley Meeting By MRS.
