f Coo. fF Fr es 2 =e 14 THE CSHAWA TIMES, Tussdey, May 7, 1963 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' THE MEMORIAL CUP finals have taken an almost be- wildering switcheroo in the last three days. Niagara Falls Flyers won the opener, 8-0, and in spite of the usual com- ments from rival coaches, such as "we had an off night" and "'they're a better team than that" -- it still looked defi- nitely as if "Hap" Emms was going to cop the bundle with his Flyers, without too much trouble. But then on Saturday night, the Oil Kings roared back for a 7-3 win to tie up the series. Even this wasn't considered fatal since the Edmon- ton team had to do better in their second game and it was expected that the Flyers might be just a little too confident. But now what is there to say--probably plenty, although at this distance, we wouldn't even hazard much of a comment. Last night, the Oil Kings thrilled their Edmonton supporters with a 5-2 verdict, to take the lead in - ap ytd it right up to Niagara Falls in the fourth game or Age Sk if the Oil Kings win again, it's likely they'll pick up the fourth win necessary for the title, without going the mit. However, San Francisco Seals did tt! They won Sunday night, 3-2, in overtime, to even up the Western League cham- pionship finals at three games apiece, after Seattle Totems had enjoyed a 3-1 lead in games, after four starts. Last night, the Seals won the title, and once again it was an over- time victory -- a thrilling climax to a great comeback -- and a finish that no doubt did a tremendous promotion job for hockey, in San Francisco. x x x x SPORTS IN BITS: -- Members of the Oshawa Lawn Bowling Club (Men's Section) are reminded that their an- nual spring meeting is scheduled for this Thursday evening, at 7:30 o'clock, in the clubhouse. . . . PIERRE PILOTE, Chicago Black Hawk defence star, has been voted the top defenceman in the NHL and winner of the James Norris Memorial Trophy, with 98 points and Toronto's Carl Brewer was next in line with 81, followed by Tim Horton and "Moose" Vasko, also of Leafs and Hawks, respectively. . . . MILWAUKEE BRAVES have sent Amado Samuel, a native of the Dominican Republic, to Toronto. Leafs. He is rated as a sizzler at shortstop, where Leafs are weak right now, but only lukewarm at the plate -- where the Leafs are also far from strong. . . . It's open to everyone--so here's a chance for Oshawa Legion Minor Association to send their coaches "to school" for a cram course, which no doubt would be beneficial to the men themselves, and so to every youngster playing minor baseball in this city. Toronto's Carl Brewer, also named to the first all-star team, was second in the individual honors. Pilote led him by 98 points to 8k. CANADA'S FINEST CIGARETTE By MIKE RATHET Associated Press Sports Writer "The moving finger writes and having writ, moves on." And so did Jim Brosnan. Brosnan, the well - known author and well-tagged relief specialist who wrote himself into Cincinnati Reds' dog- house, made his first American; League appearance Mon- day night and preserved Chi- cago White Sox' 5-1 victory over first - place Kansas City Ath- letics. Brosnan found himself in trou- ble with Reds this season whenever he picked up a base- ball or a pen. He made six re- lief appearances for Cincinnati and had been bombed for a 7.20 earned run average in 4% in- nings. The author of The Long Sea- also ran into trouble over his writings, although Cincin- nati owned Bill DeWitt denied he had put any gag on the 33- year-old righthander who posted a 10-4 record when Reds won the pennant in 1961, "In every baseball contract," explained DeWitt, "there's a clause prohibitifiz players from writing without the club's per- mission. I merely called this to Brosnan's attention. He prom- ised me he would submit to me for approval anything he wrote. He did not live up to that son and The Pennant Race/5-4 Jim Brosnan Makes Impressive Start In First AL. Appearance each collected three hits the attack, Whether that or his lack of success on the mound was the reason for Brosnan's departure, is a guess, But as in the words of Omar Khayyam, Brosnan moved on, Reds shipping him to Chicago Sunday in a waiver deal. Hours after arriving he was out on the mound, taking over for Gary Peters in the ninth inning. Brosnan struck out two of the three men he faced, pre- served Peters' first major league victory and gave himself something to write home about. The loss put the A's into a first-place tie with New York Yankees, who got home runs from Mickey Mantle and Tom Tresh in a 10-8 walloping of De- troit Tigers, In the only other American League game, Los Angeles An- gels edged Minnesota Twins Pittsburgh Pirates retained first place in the National League, beating Los Angeles Richardson each stroked three hits as Yanks pounded out 15 against Tigers' Aguirre and his successors.
