SWARTZ «urristers and Solicitors, 262 King St. East, Oshawa, Ontario. Uphold Ideals Not Same As Believing TORONTO (CP)--Chief Jus- tice James M. McRuer of the Ontario Supreme Court ruled Thursday that a pledge to up- hold Christian principles does not require a person to believe in those principles, and he quashed an Ontario Labor Rela- tions Board ruling to the con- trary. The labor relations board had refused in November, 1961, to certify a local affiliated with the Christian Labor Association of Canada on the grounds that a pledge required for membership in the local--that applicants up- hold Christian principles in col- lective bargaining and other mutual aid -- imposed restric- tions on eligibility for member- ship. The board concluded that the pledge called for prospectve members to accept Christian doctrine as a condition of mem- bership. The case involved Lo- cal 52 of the Trenton Construc- tion Workers Association, affili- ated with the CLAC, seeking certification as bargaining agent for 12 employees of Tange Company Limited, a_ genera! contracting firm at Trenton, Chief Justice McRuer ruled that the. only obligation for membership on which any ar- gument could be based is that members must uphold Christian and social principles as taught in the Bible. "A requirement to uphold Christian ethical or social prin- ciples as taught in the Bible-- whatever these terms ay mean--is in no.sense a require ment to subscribe to. any doc- trine or doctrinai belief," he said. -|bors a mental block any change THOUGHT EXTINCT Before it erupted in March 1963, Bali's Mt.
