Used Outboard Motor Calls For Checking Purchasing a used motor is a good way to get started in out- boarding for people who feel they cannot afford a mew en- gine. Although they probably won't get all the refinements found in a new engine ,a good used motor will deliver the pri- mary requisite--locomotion. The prospective buyer is urged to check the following points when selecting a used outboard motor: 1. Check compression. Grasp the starter rupe amd pull the motor over several times. Check the "pull" and "'bounce"' as the motor turns. 2. Check the crankcase bear- ings. Examine for excessive dirty oil accumulations on the armature plate, indicative of a faulty upper bearing assembly. 3. Check condition of cylin- ders. Remove the sparkplugs, and by using a pencil flash- light, peer into the cylinder head, Look for excessive car- bon accumulation, which will ultimately affect 'the perform- ance of the motor. However, don't reject a used outboard for this neason. It can be clean- ed out. 4. Check propeller bearings. Exert up-and- -wn pressure on THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday, April 25, 1963 3 the propeller shaft. Look for seepage around the prope'ler shaft bearing. Excessive up-and- down play or seepage imdicate a worn bearing. 5. Check needle valve _ re- sponse. Insist that the motor be run in a test tank. While it's running, see if the needle valves respond to adjustment. While the engine is running, check the wiring, fuel connec- tions, gasoline line and smooth operation, particularly. when idling. If these few points are checked and the. motor passes, it's probably safe to buy. SAUTEED TOMATOES Sprinkle thick - cut tomato slices with salt, pepper, basil, to taste. Place in fat remaining in Corning Ware skillet used to brown hamburgers, and sear quickly. Keep hot on back of grill.
