UPSETS CONTENDER NEW YORK (AP)--Jose Sta- when it wanted a successor to Louis St. Laurent. He was elected leader Jan. 16, 1958, six months after Prime Minister Diefenbaker had become the head of a minority Conservative government. Mr. Pearson's triumph wag about as short - lived as any could be, On Jan. 20, 1958, he proposed in the Commons that Mr. Diefenbaker resign and turn the government back to the Liberals without an election. A friend said recently: "Mike is a team man and a listener. The result sometimes is that he gets--and takes--bad advice." This was such an occasion and political carnage followed. The Liberals suffered their worst defeat in the March 31, 1958, election. Mr. Pearson at that time was a novice. at politics despite nearily 10 years in cabinet. What was worse for him, he showed it. He would biush when the opposition scored a_ point and, like most people, think of the brilliant riposte too late. .| FOUND BAFFLING Many found this baffling be- cause 'in small groups he had always excelled. What his politi- cal colleagues found annoying was that he would sometimes concede that his opponents had an excellent case in the matter under discussion. Mr. Pearson hasn't lost his ability to see every side of a question. But he has given up helping his opponets politic- ally. On occasion, he has even got mad at them. He still isn't fond of some of. the circuses which politics seem to demand. But he has learned to mix easily, to shake hands at street corners with voters and to handle large audiences, at times impressively. Four years after the 1958 dis- aster, he restored the Liberals to their 1957 Commons position and 10 months after that led them to victory as head of a minority government. Now he is saddled with the same problems he accused the|* Conservatives. of fumbling: un- nearly everyone can under- stand This is how he described Ca- nadian-American relations dur- ing the election campaign: They are something like liy- ing with your wife.
