Toronto Marlboros and Whitby Dunlops are A FABULOUS, FUN-FILLED leaving considerable to be desired as they scramble through their best-of-seven Metro Junior "A" league semi-finals. Last night's game hardly resembled a typi- cal playoff contest which is generally featured by defensive work. Twenty-one goals were compiled by the two clubs at Maple Leaf Gardens as Marlboros moved into a 2-0 series lead with a 13-8 victory. One of the fastest skating trios in the Metro circuit,. Wayne Carleton, (apparently none the worse for that punch on the beak Tuesday), Dun- can MacDonald and Pete Stemkowski, put on a great offensive display accumulating seven goals. Stemkowski notched three while the others shared two each. Whitby's offense led by Bill Collins and Wayne Weller certainly scored enough goals to assure victory on any night, but poor defensive efforts caused the defeat. Lack of backchecking by the forward unit and slow thinking by the rearguards were the principle drawbacks. Marlboros engineered a real insult in the second period by scoring two goals while two men short in the first half of that frame. Whitby led 4-2 after one stanza, but collapsed for eight minutes and 34 seconds at the beginning of the second period while Marlboros proceeded to pump home five goals. With less than two minutes remaining in the middle 20-minute session Bill Smith and Bill Col- lins scored to again brighten prospects of a Whitby victory. Dunlops kept rolling in the third period and drew even at 7-7 after only one minute of play, but a disputed Marlboro goal a couple of minutes later caused chaos on the Whitby club, and finally a bench penalty was meted out by referee Ken Arthurs. At this point, Collins continued the discussions with Arthurs and subsequently was ejected from the game. When Collins departed for the dressing room, Dunlops folded shortly thereafter. REFEREES WIN ALL VERBAL BATTLES Perhaps Whitby Dunlops who obviously. have displayed vehemently their displeasure with offi- ciating thus far by picking up several misconducts should try a different approach. This program cer- tainly has not paie dividends, although I sympa- thize with theron the frequent lack of competent officiating over the 1962-63 season. But unfortunately they (the referees) still have the upper hand and with key men cooling their heels for 10 minutes and more, at one time, this hurts Whitby, not the referees. Tomorrow's game at Maple Leaf Gardens is vitally important to Dunlops as they strive to stay in the running. With some readjustment in their defensive game, plus fine goal scoring, they could be in a position to tie their series in the fourth game at Whitby on Tuesday night. Neil McNeil Maroons and Knob Hill Farms resume their series in the opener tomorrow with their second game in the series. A new starting time of 1:30 was created to leave room for pos- sible overtime action in either contest. TOWN AND COUNTRY ... Whitby Mer- cantile Hockey league finals begin tomorrow afternoon at the Whitby Community arena at 1:30 with Durno's Garage going against Fleming's Shell. This is a best-of-five series. Defending champion Arena Sunoco bowed out of competition at the hands of Durnos last Sunday . Uxbridge Black Hawks captufed the Lakeshore Intermediate "B" championship last night with a 3-2 victory over Trenton RCAF Globetrotters. Hawks swept the best-of-seven series in four games.
