Now available at this Newspaper Office (or from address below) is the New 1962 Design Book en- titled 'Canadian Guide to YOUR GARDEN Pruning Healthy y HENK KOBES Rundle's Garden Centre Why do we prune? Trees and shrubs, when trans- planted, usually need to be prui back a bit, especially when they grow fast in the nur- sery. It will help the plant in getting. established again after transplanting as well as in giv- ing it a better shape. Established shade trees need pruning during the first years to develop a well-branched tree with strong crotches, to increase the 'beauty, and usefulness; and to prolong life. Proper carly pruning is very much worth while. By thinning out and spac- ing of the main branches and by cutting the undesirable ones out you can help in developing a better structure. ; Older trees may need prun- ing to keep them from grow- ing too large and becoming dangerous, also costly to re- move. There are two main reasons for pruning shrubs. First: An DESIGN No_- 482 House '1183 Sq, Ft. Garage 469 " * | older shrub tends to get woody, bare at the bottom, too thick lor diseased. To prevent. this we usually do some pruning every year. By removing some of the older branches completely, we encourage the shrub in produc- ing new shoots fram the bottom. Assists Growth All the dead and di A 'THE HOME WORKSHOP | may be advisable to obtain a pruning manual. Your local: Be 's will glady su} branches are removed. Some shrubs produce more and better flowers on young wood -- Flowering Almond, Red| mua Spirea and Quince. In the second place we prune to limit size. Just shearing doesn't give you a good-looking shrub. To prune an 8 {. shrub back to 5 ft. for instance, cut about half of the branches back to 5 ft. and the rest to 3 or 4 feet. Prevent the shrub from getting too thick at the top 'o create a natural shape. While all trees and shrubs prune well in the dormant stage, some should be pruned right after they bloom in the spring, e.g. Forsythia, Flower- ing Almond etc. Fruit Trees need to be prun- ed to remove sucker branches and crossing and rubbing branches; to keep the tree open and from gorwing too tall. Currants and Gooseberries: each year remove some of the older branches entirely and also the weak shoots from the base of the plant. Young strong branches bear the best. Red Raspberries are pruned by removing old and weak canes. Black and Purple Raspberries need rather severe shortening of the laterals to obtain good sized fruit and to develop shoots for the following year. By RUTH W.
