(CP)-- The man who led 28 Canadian weekly newspaper editors on a visit to North American Air De- fence Command headquarters at Colorado Springs, Colo., says there was no campaigning against the Canadian govern- ment's nuclear arms stand by Air Marshal C. Roy Siemon of the RCAF. John Pinckney of Rosetown, ident of the Canadian eekly Newspapers Association and publisher of the weekly Rosetown Eagle, was comment- ing in an interview on a report in the Washington Daily News. The News said Air rshal Slemon, deputy NORAD com- mander, campaigned against the Canadian government's nu- clear arms stand during visits to NORAD by the 28 weekly edi- tors, the Toronto Board of Trade and members of the Ca- nadian Institute of International Affairs. "Air Marshal Slemon in no way whatever mentioned Mr. Diefenbaker, his government or his policies to us while we were at his headquarters," Mr. Pinckney said, Fought Under Five Flags In Seven Wars SALT: LAKE CITY (AP)-- Charles Sweeny, 81, former for- eign correspondent and adven- turer who fought under five flags in seven wars, died Wed- nesday. Physicians attributed death to infirmities of age. A native of San. Francisco, Sweeny enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 16 and fought in the Spanish-American War, acquiring a taste for bat- tle he never lost. He graduated from Notre Dame University, the U.S. Mil- itary Academy at West Point, and France's Ecole Militaire. He fought in the French For- eign Legion and the U.S. Army in the First World War, in rev- volutions in Russia, Turkey and Africa, and served as an ad- viser to the Loyalists in the Spanish Civil War. He later organized the Eagle Squadron, consisting of U.S. volunteers attached to the French Air Force. When France surrendered to Germany, Sweeny and his squadron went to England. He continued to command the squadron with the rank of group captain in the RAF, until 1942, when the squadron was transferred to the U.S. Army Air Force. Between military assignments Sweeny was a foreign corre. spondent, Liberals Rap Caouette On Kelly Remark OTTAWA (CP)--Liberal party headquarters replied Wednes- day to Real Caouette's charge that hockey star Red Kelly, as Liberal MP for York West in the last Parliament, merely sat in the Commons "with his arms and legs crossed and doesn't Say a word." The Liberal statement re. ferred to press files on the dep- uty Social Credit leader, who made the remark about Mr. Kelly at Kirkland Lake Tues- day night. It said the files show that Mr. aouette, in announcing an ex. tensive speaking tour the day before Parliament opened last Sept. 27, had said his Commons attendance record would prob- ably be worse than that of any other member. It said he had added that "elections are not won in the House of Commons."
