They testified before Mr. Jus- tice T. G. Norris' one-man in- vestigation of labor strife and shipping disruptions on the Great Lakes. In cause in effect the union is giv- ing him a job, you are not hir- ing him," said Charles Dubin, lawyer for the federal inquiry. "Is that right?" "That is correct," said Cap- tain Misener. Mr. Peterson, 42, whose fam- ily firm in Fort William oper- ates 28 ships with some 700 em- |ployees, also agreed that the old company-employee relation- ship had disappeared. He said the loyalties between employer' and employee no longer existed. He agreed with Mr. Dubin that the fear of wildcat walk- outs had frightened shipowners, making them fearful of talking against the SIU. This, he ad- mitted, was an "alarming state of affairs." Captain Misener contended "The employees are no longer employees of ours," said Cap- tain Misener, 42, whose family firm in Port Colborne, Ont., op- erates 11 ships with a staff of some 334 employees. UNION HIRES, FIRES He admitted that shipping companies have abdicated their rights to hire, fire, transfer, pro- mote and demote their em- ployees, leaving them to the SIU under its hiring hall sys- tem and its iron-bound shipping rules. "That system results in no real relationship between the employer and the employee be- his own expense. In all other respects the conditions of sale are the stand- ing conditions of sale of the Court as modified by the conditions of sale settled by the undersigned. On the premises is said to be erected a dwelling house. Further particulars and conditions of sale may be had from Messrs. Creighton, Drynan and Murdoch, Solicitors, Oshawa, Ontario.
