There were 57 entrants in the establishmen qualifying round and it was five bowling at its best with the 4 15 shooters qualifying for the Zone Elimination Finals, which must be concluded on or before February 17th. Oshawa bowlers usually fare very in this Canadian having produced several bowlers who have gone on to win Dominion honors in both the Ladies' and Men's Divisions For once, the hottest five-pin bowler in Oshawa managed to finish on top, when Ozzie Keeler led the qualifiers with a nice total for his five game block The "Mightly Mite" racked up 267, 249, 259, 264 and 266 for another one of his good sets, 1305. Right on his heels was none other than his Acadian Cleancr teammate, Denny Linton with 177, 228, 284, 296 and 315 for a total of 1300. This is more like the Linton we remember, who holds the record for a five-game block in the Molson competition. In third place was another well-known bowler, Ron Swart, with 331, 280, 265, 226, 193, for a total of 1295. This is nothing ew for Ron as he represented this Zone in last year's Eastern Finals of the Men's Team Event. Bert Harding followed Ron Swart with 256, 292, 263, 218 and 255 for 1284; Reg Hickey kept the "'southpaws" in there when he finished next with 200, 214, 293, 348 and 224 for 1279. In sixth position was the sur- prise package when Alex Don- aldscn who usually devotes all his time to organizing these tournaments, took it seriously for one day and came up with 211, 215, 311, 284 and 255 for a total of 1276. Some people were surprised, but Alex was not one of them. (Editor's note -- "Says Alex?"') The seventh bowler, Dave "Wimpy" Reynolds, chose just about the toughest way to com- pile a 1274 total. "Wimpy" started with 181, came back with 356 and 246, followed with 163 and finished with a blaze of glory with 318. "How's that for what it takes. Nice shooting Dave." One of Oshawa's most promis- ing young bowlers took the next position when Bob Strutt com- Bowlers Tourney piled 246, $22, 256, 206 and 241 for 1271. The other qualifiers were in the following order, Joe Kastner 1263; Bob Gallagher 1257; Jim Cassells 1233; Hank Sarnovsky 1227; Harold Ballem 1211; Dan Taylor 1198 and finally, Ray a who carried the mail for | SPORTS CALENDAR TODAY HOCKEY , OHA Intermediate "B"" Lake- shcre League -- Bowmanville vs Uxbridge Black Hawks, at Uxbridge Arena, 8.30 p.m. Oshawa Minor Assoc. -- (Ban- tam League) -- Police Assoc vs Coca-Cola, at 5.00 p.m; Canadian Corps vs Scugog Cleaners, at 6.00 p.m.; Local 1500 vs B'Nai B'Rith, at 7.00 p.m.; Duplate vs Local 1817, at 8.00 p.m.; Westmount vs Can- adian Tire, at 9.00 p.m. TUESDAY All the qualifiers mentioned are requested to keep in touch with the management of Motor City Lanes for information re- garding the date and establish- ment at which the City Zone Eliminations will be held The Ladies' Division will be concluded this coming week. McINTYRE HOOD Special London, England Correspondent to The Oshawa Times LONDON -- Tottenham Hot- spurs, winners of the English Football Association Cup for the last two seasons will not achieve the record of winning the eup three years in succession, In the first soccer game played in London since Boxing Day, they were knocked out in the third round of the cup by Burnley by a score of 3-0, Thus Burnley secured revenge for being beat- en by the Spurs in the semi- final in 1961 and the final in 1962, And Tottenham will now be able to concentrate their en- ergies. in trying to win the League championship and the European Cup Winners Compet- ition, in which they are still en- gaged, The game, already three times postponed because of an sa |ice-bound ground at Tottenham, = |was played in wintry conditions on a horror of a pitch. In the morning, after all the ice had been cleared off the field by the use of chemicals, it was passed fore kick-off time left the ground with a greasy, sloppy surface over an iron-hard foun- dation, Burnley suited themselves to the conditions much better than did the Spurs, who were with- out their captain, Danny Blanch- flower, in hospital for a knee operation and their Welsh inter- national outside right, Terry Medwin, The reserves brought in did not measure up to the standard of those they replaced, and that had something to do with the defeat of Tottenham. ALL AWAY WINS So far, only eight of the 32 third round matches postponed from January 5 have been played, and in not one of them did the home team win, In seven, the. visiting side won, and in the eighth, Chelsea and Tranmere Rovers played a 2-2 tie on January 5, but. have still not been able to stage the replay at Stamford Bridge. A rather unusual situation is likely to develop on January 26, the day set aside for the fourth round of the cup. The Football Association has ruled that as playable, But more snow be- where opposing teams have FLYING LOW Oshawa Hawks Lose In Sarnia Oshawa Hawks suffered their fourth defeat in five games, Saturday night as they were beaten 95-74 by a sharp-shoot- ing Sarnia YMCA crew, in the Lake Huron city. The loss, coupled with a London victory over St, Thomas, left Oshawa all alone in the league base- ment and moved Sarnia into second place in the five-team loop. Oshawa must win both their remaining games, here next Saturday against Sarnia and on February 9 against London, if they are to make the final play- off spot. The Hawks, contrary to the final score, played one of their better games. They had an early 8:point lead on some good shooting by Carl Cheski and Brent Oldfield and appeared in the first ten minutes as though they could easily upset the erful Sarnia club. But the *Y" team, playing before some 200 or more loca! fans, were not to be denied. Slick-shooting Jim Bowling canned four shots in-a- row from outside the key and FOUL SHOTS: The Hawks were minus Tom Olinyk, who had to work and team captain Brent Oldfield suffered from a bad bout of the flu and even at that he managed eight points before "fouling out" in the last seconds of the game, . . . Bol- stered by these two, playing in top shape and with their own bigger floor to play on, the Hawks should be real tough for next Saturday's battle... Jim Rowden netted his firs basket as a Hawk and Bob Booth once again played a top game for the Oshawa club, who appeared to be about ready to break wide open... . Saturday could be their big night, SARNIA: Horley 4, Davidson 8, Nicholson 20, McKellar 7, Shurkey, Bowling 23, Gordon 2. Hay 2, Armstrong 12. Total OSHAWA: Oldfield 8, Cheski 20, Guan 3, Grier 12, Etchells 2, Kolodzie 2, Reilly 15, Rowden 2, Booth 5 and Newey 5, Total 74. Officials: Frank Martin and read Jacobson, Port Huron, ich. both qualified for the fourth round, the fourth rourd game will be played, But in all other cases, postponed or undecided third round ties will be played -- weather permitting -- on the date fixed for the fourth round. SCOTTISH DRAW Although several of the first round games have not yet been played, the draw for the sec- ond round of the Scottish Cup has been made. In seven of the games the opposing teams will not be known until postponed first round ties have been de- cided, The draw, however, provides the possibility for some stirring matches. Top of the list is the' game which will be played be- tween Falkirk or Celtic, prob- ably the latter, against Heart of Midlothian, on the former's ground Last season Celtic knocked out Hearts 4-3 after a tough struggle, so that this game should be a rouser, Other first division teams drawn against each other are Kilmarnock at home to Queen of the South, and Rangers away THE OSHAWA TIMES, Mondoy, Jonuery 21, 1963 43 ians or Stranraer, 'with the chances in favor o! the Airdrie team. getting through to meet Rangers. The yest of the top teams look to have an easy passage to the second round, Dunfermline trav- el to play Cowdenbeath; Third Lanark are away from home to East Fife; Dundee are at home to Montrose; Fartick or Morton are at home to Arbroath; Ab- erdeen play St. Johnstone or Stenhousemuir away from home; Hibernians visit Brechin City; St, Mirren visit Berwick to play the Rangers there; Mo- therwell are away to East Stir- ling or Stirling Albion, and Ayr or Dundee United are at home to Albion Rovers, In none of these games are the second division teams given much chance of winning over First Division opposition, One non - league club, how- ever, will go into the third round, Gala Fairydean or Keith are drawn at home against Duns in the second round, all three of these clubs being out-| side the charmed circle of first-| from home against Airdrieon- clas: league football. Acadian Move To Acadian Cleaners five - pin club won a very important series in the Toronto City Men's Major league when they took a four-to-one victory over the Darrigo Italian Foods' club at Ace Bowling Centre, on Satur- day. With only six bowlers avail- able, Acadians had to be at their best to stop the classy Darrigo outfit and the boys proved their worth by coming through with a brilliant team effort. ; The first game was closely fought for the first four frames until Hank Sarnovsky took over in a relief role and came through with a whopping 183 for six frames. "Dutch" Lugtenburg led the way in the first with 346, fol- lowed by Bob Gallagher with 275, Gord Longarini 277 and Primo Vagnini 258, were bowl- ing well for Darrigo's and Tom Lenzi"s 261 was also a good effort. Acadians 1325 to 1218. Going into the second game tied for top spot, Acadians turned in another big. one with 1385 to nose out the Italian boys who racked up 1275. Bob Gallagher led the Acadians in this game with 308, then big 66' Nick Nichol tipped in several rebounds and the defending Canadian Senior "B" champs were out in front to stay, By halftime, they had built up a 45-31 lead despite fine individual efforts from Carl Cheski and Fred Reilly, who kept the Hawks close. Oshawa carried most of the floor play in the second half but couldn't seem to keep pace with the superb shooting of their rivals. Sarnia hit on better than 65 per cent of their shots from the floor and easily maintained their lead, Grant Gordon was their big "gunner" in the latter stanza as he kept pace with his taller mates Bowling and Nicholson. Bib Bob Grier making his first start for the Hawks hit several beautiful shots from under the basket and served notice, that when he gets in shape, he'll be really tough to stop. It was only the third time the Midland ace has had a ball in his hands, this year, Oshawa used three centres, Cheski, Gunn and Grier over the last three minutes of the game, in an effort to hold a height dis- advantage, and even went into an all court press in the dying seconds, but Sarnia had too big a lead and coasted to a fairly easy win.
