But the. former Montreal Alouettes halfback says his greatest ex- perience in football was last fall when he piloted McGill Univer- sity Redmen to the Senior Inter- collegiate title in his first year as "Tt was more satisfying than any individual effort, being so happy for 35 guys together," said Bewley, a powerfully built, crew-cut native of Stoney Creek, Ont., near Hamilton. Bewley had his share of indi- vidual triumphs. He won. the scoring title one year and all- star recognition twice in senior intercollegiate league with University of Toronto Blues. In bis eight years with Alou- ettes, he was a valuable pass receiver and ball-carrier as well as the team's placement kicker. He won the Big Four scoring title in 1958, and was named the country's best Canadian player! for three seasons. When he left Alouettes utte| more than a year ago to take the coaching job at McGill, Many were surprised. He says he misses playing, but finds he enjoys coaching even more, "When you're a player, you can pretty well forget about football from one season to the next, After the game Saturday, you can forget about it until practice Tuesday. "But as a coach, the game is with you all the time. You've got to figure out what things you need to practise, what type of team you'll be up against, and so.on. You're always watch- ing the over-all picture. od a stunning display of pass- ing in the Jast three minutes to Overcome a 13-8 deficit and squeak through to the title 15-13. Bewley explained the slow start to the season was probably due to the inexperience' of the new coaching staff Bewley and former Alouette teammates Tom Moran and Ron Murphy. LOSES QUARTERBACK 'And also," he adds with a grin, "before that first Queen's game we showed them over and over again the films of the 1961 final, when Queen's beat the Stuffing out of us. By the time the game came, I knew they "It gives you that much more insight into the game. I love much better." In his rookie season as a coach Bewley did things the hard way, from beginning to end of the season. STRONG FINISHERS The Redmen lost their first two games to Varsity and West- jern, They faced elimination from championship 'hopes in the third game, when they met Queen's Golden Gaels, the de- fending champions. Queens had beaten Western and Varsity by wide margins. As far as next year's team | goes Bewley is optimistic. "We'll only be losing four rst - stringers, with a good chance of two of them return- ing for post-graduate work." Bewley says his major worry is finding a replacement for passing quarterback Tom Sky- peck, who is leaving to practise dentistry this spring. "Skypeck could definitely make the grade as a pro quar- terback in Canada," says Bew- ley of the 24-year-old former Cornell University star. Bewley thinks college football here would benefit greatly from introduction--in a reasonable way--of athletic scholarships for outstanding athletes.
